Oh, Happy Chinese New Year! Let’s start my (supposedly) bad-luck Goat Year with the now-mandatory Letterboxd list of my film collection~

amys-film-collection-letterboxd

I have a really weird history with films– born in the late 80s, you’d think I would’ve grown watching loads of 90s kids stuff, but I actually grew up with a lot of Silly Symphonies (which were released in the 30s) and loads of Disney 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s stuff, plus a lot of more grown up 80s movies. Poltergeist, The Thing, The Fly and The Stuff were particularly scary stuff (and I’m pretty sure I was scared of yogurt or white stuff at some point).

I don’t ever remember buying any original VHS tape, except for the rare birthday gift of a Disney’s Sing-Along Songs chapter or that X-Men tape I have. My first DVDs buys were Coyote Ugly, She’s All That and Loser — you can’t blame me. I was a 15-year-old girl. The collection grew bigger, and possibly exploded during my years abroad. I’m nearing my 500th movie.

I’m just guessing this is Sony’s fault because Dixie Chicks are signed under Columbia which is part of Sony, which makes it part of this whole SME Content region restriction issue. The Dixie Chicks Vevo channel is half locked for me, and I hate it. I’m sorry for the Dixie Chicks, but I fucking hate their channel.

Itoh Tube and Yu Aoi?

December 4, 2009 — 2 Comments

I have no idea abut this, but I ran into this story from Walkerplus~

As most fans know, Yu Aoi is represented by Itoh Company — whatever their actual reputation is — and here comes a story with the title “Itoh Tube leaking Voyeuristic Videos of Popular Actresses!?” WHAT? I hope that by “Voyeuristic” in Kanji, they mean “insightful” otherwise… WHAT? LOL

From what I could gather… meaning from what makes sense on the Google Translate. It seems like Itoh Company is re-vamping their YouTube Account (because prior to these random releases, their channel was rubbish) by creating a sort of a series featuring their signed artists… including Yu. It seems like those VH1 “Diary of…” where they followed x singer/group while they were preparing a concert, etc. It’s supposed to be going into the life of x idol while they go about their business and personal life… I think.

Here’s Yu’s Itoh Tube space. There’s two videos at the moment — one of Yu’s Itoh Channel intro and her own intro *minna-san, aoi yuu desu* xD and a short Making of the latest dancing Kirin CM. I only understood, “It’s been a while since you last dance” or something like that.

I’m impressed at how she manages to change her voice when talking and sponsoring. One seems very serious and even very grown-up, and then she goes on her “work voice” totally high and chirpy. Like two different people. LOL

What you think?

Remember VH1’s Divas?

April 23, 2009 — 2 Comments

Remember that VH1 segment where women sang? You know, that one show that gathered Gloria Stefan, Mariah Carey, Shania Twain… etc, etc~~ Sorry, I’m a little weak in the mind right now. xD

Well, Divas’ is making a comeback~~

Look, I get Divas~ I love talented women… Sophia Loren to me is a legend, whom we could call Diva, I guess~ How about calling the show Legends? LOL, Let’s face it! Divas is now synonym with bitch, hard to work with, and high maintenance.

Anyway~~~ I have issues with VH1’s announcement. First, “Pop, R&B, and hip-hop” – Heck? How about country music? How about rock? Then, VH1 is also asking listeners to pitch in. Let’s face that too! That’s rubbish. *sighs* Why? Britney Spears and Lady Gaga are being suggested! What the…

Who would you suggest? I dunno, howz about a duet by Joan Jett and Reba McEntire… or~~~ hmm… Regina Spektor with Pink? Woah, bizarre. I’d better quit thinking of duets. xD Just naming people~~ Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Alanis, Alison Krauss, Amanda Palmer, Adele, Emily Loizeau… Bjork? xD

How about mixing music!?!?! Shiina Ringo!!! Or okay… Utada Hikaru… Faye Wong!!! Andrea Echeverri! Bibi Chow? Salyu!!!

ZOMG! A duet between Marit Larsen and Regina Spektor? I’d die~~~

Or one with Bjork and Salyu??? Alanis with Shiina? Amanda Palmer with Andrea Echeverri? Adele with Bibi Chow? Utada Hikaru with Christina? Faye Wong with… Loizeau?? Faye Wong with Bjork?? Utada with Keys? LOL

We (meaning me) interrupt your Olympic and Photobooks posts (finally) to report that Korean-American comedian Margaret Cho’s VH1 reality show, The Cho Show, will be premiering next week on VH1 (America, obviously… I’ll just have to find it online), Thursdays at 11pm.

Lucky for us… AfterElton.com has a full ‘sneak peek’ of the first episode, Korean of the Year, where Cho battles the idea of accepting or not the award of Korean of the Year… The episode is divided into 4 parts, no commercial breaks~~~ I think the parts I laughed the most were Part 3 and 4.

If you don’t know who Margaret Cho is, what the hell is wrong with you? xD Cho is one of the funniest people I’ve heard, though her humor might not be for everyone… she’s funny once you get used to. I first discovered her by watching a YouTube link to her comedy act, I’m the One that I Want ~~~ xD

I just love Margaret’s parents~~~ and her imitation of her mother! xD

We’re back with a new edition of why the 90’s ruled!! For past reasons of why they ruled, check the following links:

Ruth InfarinatoThis time, I’m gonna be talking about the coolest VJ in MTV Latin America, and that was Ruth! The orange-haired Argentinean who graced MTV Latin America for long enough so she could make an impact on my TV viewing. She was chill, she was hip… she was just what VJs are supposed to be.

According to Wikipedia, Ruth is a host and an actress, and became one of the main figures for the Latin American youth thanks to her job as a VJ for over 10 years. I mainly knew her from her show Conexion, but she also hosted, co-produced and wrote several other interactive programs… which make her even cooler.

You see, MTV was cooler at that point in time… VJs didn’t try hard to be hip and cool. MTV was actually about music, and reality tv and crappy series weren’t part of the scheduling. You could actually keep your tv on MTV, and no one would think that was weird. There was also Daria, Beavis and Butthead, and even Ren and Stimpy!

And why the heck am I writing about this? Well, I was watching old tapes, and I had recorded some of Ruth’s show Conexion. I actually ended up watching the whole show, and it made me nostalgic about watching MTV, lol. I barely watch any MTV, maybe I occasionally end up watching it at 3 or 4 in the morning, but you wouldn’t catch me watching it during the day.

Nowadays, I tend to watch more VH1, but it’s not necessarily good either, but it’s better than MTV’s programs… most of the times. I remember that in Canada I began watching MuchMusic, which is like Canadian MTV… after a while, I was more of a MuchMoreMusic type of person, almost like the Canadian version of VH1. I did watch quite a bit of CMT too, but that was in Canada – Cable in Peru did had, at one point in time, CMT in their listing but it didn’t last much longer than a month.

Well, my music video knowledge is very limited, but these are a couple of the trivia that I know by heart:

  • The first EVER music video aired on MTV was “Video Killed the Radio Star” by, if I recall correctly, The Bugles.
  • “Thriller” by Michael Jackson was the first ever Music Video-Turned Short Film.
  • The first ever Music Video I remember watching is “Remember the Time” by Michael Jackson – another short film/music vid!

Okay, I’m sleepy. It’s 5 a.m. but I won’t be able to sleep if I think of forgetting about this when I wake up. Tuesdays mark “new CDs and DVDs” day, I should know, I was the one going on a shopping trip every Tuesday to get my favorite music and movies in Canada. Don’t do it here in Peru, mainly because there is not “new merchandise” day that I know of, and things just don’t get here in time.

Anyway, for anyone – I am the ideal consumer. If I like your product, I will likely buy it. However, products have been sucking lately… also because I hate thinking Blu-ray discs and HD are on the market now, so studios are not releasing two-discs DVDs anymore.

But let’s talk about music as a more general example. Continue Reading…
