Do your thing~

But if you’re lazy, I’ve set up (almost) complete playlists on Xiami and YouTube.

Happy new year, everyone!

Sorry for the lack of posts last month. To make up for it, here are five posts so you can catch up to my 2013 and to get you going this 2014.

I haven’t done one in a very long while, huh?

Since the demise of the LivingSocial application on Facebook — TuneSocial — and my shift from downloads to streaming… it’s been hard to keep track of the music I listen to and rate. I tried Discogs.com, but I’m thinking of dropping it because they’re such an uptight community. Every time you add an album that doesn’t adhere to their guidelines of barcodes, catalog numbers, and milimetric genres, you get voted down.

I don’t buy or sell anything there, and I find myself adding more than I’m actually just searching for… and still there’s people who vote me down and are bitchy about it, instead of helping out and finding the lacking info themselves.

I rather keep my own database without hassle. I’ve added about 350 albums tonight… in the time it took me to add just a few albums at Discogs.

These are the albums I’ve heard this year. There aren’t TOO MANY amazing ones yet, but there are a few very good singles that shall be contenders for the Top50 list this year~

This year I’m doing better with my music than with my movies. LOL I’ve only seen like new movies this year, hahaha. If I don’t work harder on that, I’m not going to be able to pick my Best Movies this year.

Light blue highlight only points out a “special edition” xD

Juanes said that he dreams in Spanish, so that’s why he usually doesn’t sing in another language, even though he’s collaborated with artists that don’t necessarily sing in Spanish. So when he did his song Hoy Me Voy [YouTube] — included in his 2007 album La Vida Es un Ratico — and did a Spanglish version with Colbie Caillat, it was interesting.

For the most part, the Spanglish version does a good job at translating the Spanish — “Devuélveme ese corazón que tú no supiste valorar lo que te daba yo de verdad.” to a pretty close “So give me back this heart of mine ’cause you didn’t feel the love that I would give to you every day and night.

A literal translation would be “Give me back this heart that you didn’t value what I really gave to you.

You know there’s a problem when you add the words “every day and night,” as well as the cringe-worthy random “baby.” xD Which they use in the chorus (nonetheless!!!) — “Tengo miedo de no olvidarte y por eso de ti me despido” with the line “I am scared baby, I won’t forget you and that’s why i need to let you go, so-

The literal translation for that would be “I’m scared of not forgetting you, and that’s why I’m saying goodbye.” Compared to that, the Portuguese/Spanish version (Spanguese? Portugish?) goes the dramatic way with the line “Tive medo, fui covarde, é por isso que de ti me despeço” which translates literally to “I was scared, I was a coward, and that’s why I’m saying goodbye.

Obviously, the mixing of Spanish and Portuguese is way more natural than with English. However, it’s super interesting that the changed lyrics in Portguese are even more dramatic than in Spanish… which usually have dramatic lyrics.

Anyway, I prefer the arrangements for this version with Paula Fernandes because it gives it a super serious and more devastating tone. The original version of just Juanes in Spanish is a little too peppy, and the version with Colbie Caillat is just… too soft.

Best Albums of 2000-2009

December 23, 2009 — 7 Comments

Well, I’ve found it easier to narrow down the number of albums for this Top100 Albums of the Decade, than to narrow my list of songs to 100. LOL I have around 350 songs at the moment. This is gonna be difficult… and also in every possible language xD

Anyway, I’m sure that I had to take out some albums to include other albums. It was all a very difficult process to figure out what to include… going from “do I really have to take this song out?” to “OMG, I really love all these songs from this artist!!! Which one should I choose!- So please, bear with me, and comment what to add.

Esta es la traducción de inglés -> español del artículo que escribí para YAM 003 titulado “Too Foreign for your Own Good. Please Sing in English” en el que hablo de los más recientes lanzamientos de artistas de no habla inglesa estrenando material en el idioma para entrar en el mercado.

Como el artículo es un poco largo, pueden leerlo después del break.

Grammy Nominees 2009!

December 4, 2008 — 3 Comments

Did you know that they changed the way they announce the nominees? I didn’t. Just found out tonight they were doing presentations and stuff, instead of just naming them… didn’t watch, did you? Anyway, I’m not really impressed with the music… Coldplay with Viva la Vida, REALLY? I thought the album was pretty rubbish…

Viva la Vida got 7 nods, including Record, Song and Album of the Year. Really? Lil Wayne apparently has 8 nods, but I can only count 6… so whatever.

Other nominees include… Sara Bareilles with Love Song in the Song of the Year category – it baffles me how she can get a nod, when Regina Spektor has NONE. Jason Mraz is also nominated in this category with I’m Yours, while Duffy and The Jonas Brothers are nominated in the Best New Artist category.

And I’m too lazy to go category by category, so here’s a not-so-tidy list of some of the names in the list…

Pink, Leona Lewis, Katy Perry, Kid Rock, Alison Krauss, John Mayer, Paul McCartney, Eagles, Maroon5, Alicia Keys, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Sheryl Crow, Rihanna, Daft Punk, Kylie Minogue, Moby, Robyn, Natalie Cole, Josh Groban, Rufus Wainwright, Metallica, Radiohead, LeAnn Rimes, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Juanes, Ximena Sariñana, DLG… etc etc.

Including nominations for the films American Gangster, August Rush, Juno, Mamma Mia!, and Sweeney Todd for Best Compilation Soundtrack. The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones, Iron Man, There Will Be Blood, and Wall-E for Best Score Soundtrack… AND, Wall-E, The Bucket List, Walk Hard the Dewey Cox Story, and a double nomination for Enchanted for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture.

For the long boring list of nominees… lol – you can go here.

I did a 2006 Best Songs List from the music I had been listening to on my iPod, Internet, or even CD… no radio for me.  – so I thought I’d post this year’s also. In no particular order:
