GuGu the Cat!

February 13, 2009 — 1 Comment

It arrived yesterday ^o^  !!!

I actually celebrated my b-day last night with a proper meal, and apparently my last YesAsia order. Belated Happy Bday to me!!! And happy 5 year blogging~~~ xD

My first EVER Japanese DVD – all because it listed ‘English subtitles’. I just couldn’t help myself.

Gu~ Gu~ Datte Neko de Aru, which was translated to GuGu the Cat, was not the movie I was expecting – in a good way. I think I had only seen a short clip of the film, perhaps the 30 second tv spot, where they open the box, GuGu shows up and they all go “kawaiiiiiiiiiiii”. So I thought the film was a comedy, but just like some other WOWOW projects I’ve seen, they border on the dramedy field (like Camouflage, 1 Million Yen Girl, and Don’t Laugh at my Romance).

– See, WOWOW people~~~ if you’d release those mentioned above with subs, I’d probably buy them. –

In GuGu, Asako Kojima (Kyoko Koizumi) is a manga artist who hasn’t had much time for life, other than taking care of her pet cat Ça Va and seldomly writing and drawing for her manga series alongside her team of assistants, including Naomi (Juri Ueno), a fervent fan since her teen years.

There’s a lot of fun moments… sometimes dealing with romantic relationships, and overall human relations… as well as some cat relationships xD – so if you like cats, you can probably enjoy this one.

BAFTA Winners 2009

February 8, 2009 — Leave a comment

Paving the way to Oscar… BAFTA were just handed out~~ My private predictions weren’t too far off, scoring 15/20… considering this is my first BAFTA prediction, I think I did ok~~

Slumdog got 7 out of the 11 nods it had, including Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Score – Benjamin Button didn’t leave empty handed either (finally!, lol) – It took home 3 out of 11 nods, all in technical categories such as Best Visual Effects, Makeup and Production Design (which is Art Direction).

Kate Winslet pushes forward as the favorite in the  Best Actress for winning for The Reader, Heath… well, like, is that a surprise anymore? I’m sure a lot of America will tune into Oscar night to see Heath winning. And Penelope Cruz pushes forward for an Oscar win as Supporting Actress for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona – and well, Mickey Rourke~~~ MAN, that’s a tough one to call. Sean or Mickey?

Animation was a tough category, WALL-E ended up victorious against AWESOME animated films, Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir, which also lost Best Foreign Film against I’ve Loved You So Long (Il y a Longtemps que Je t’Aime)

Read the whole list of winners here.

Awarded Movie Watched List

January 27, 2009 — 2 Comments

Last year was a particularly good year for me to watch films. Why? Well, compared to the previous year, in which many or most of the films nominated were still on my ‘to-watch’ list, this year I’ve done all my movie watching before Oscar was announced.

Oscar Ballot 81st - Watched

Green = WATCHED
Orange = Dying to watch~~

Less than a month to Oscar, 4 films I’m dying to see~~ *cross fingers*

SAGs are Today!

January 25, 2009 — Leave a comment

Totally forgot about them during the week…

I doubt I’ll be doing the Red Carpet live blogging… but be sure to check outthe website for blogging of the ceremony as winners are announced… Also, check out Inside the Gold for more live blogging of the event.

I am most likely RUBBISH at SAG prediction. Last year, when I did that Marion Cotillard FYC fan-made campaign, it totally slipped my mind and she lost. Anyway, I’ve seen almost ALL films… except for Rachel Getting Married, and Tropic Thunder. LOL’ yes, you can roll your eyes if you want.

Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role:
Sean Penn – Milk
Best Surprise:
Richard Jenkins – The Visitor

Outstanding Female Actor in a Leading Role:
Kate Winslet – Revolutionary Road
Best Surprise:
Meryl Streep – Doubt
I’m sorry… I did enjoy her character however bad you may think she was. But I’m iffy here… Anne Hathaway still has a chance, in my opinion~~~ I already explained the BAFTA snub.

Outstanding Male Actor in a Supporting Role:
Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight
Best Surprise:
Philip Seymour Hoffman – Doubt
Sorry, after watching Doubt, I am a big BIG fan of the film in respect of acting.

Outstanding Male Actor in a Supporting Role:
Taraji P. Henson – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Best Surprise:
Penelope Cruz – Vicky Cristina Barcelona
I probably could’ve chosen the opposite, but the fact that I got it so wrong last year makes me think Henson has the best shot at it here. Penelope speaks a little too much Spanish in this role, that’s why I’m iffy. Otherwise, I would’ve chosen her as my winner. Of course, Winslet could win here and screw me up in the Leading Actress~~ LOL

Outstanding Performance by a Cast:
Milk
Best Surprise:
Doubt

– That’s it~~~ all my film winner predictions. Sorry, don’t do TV, but I’m expecting Tina Fey and 30 Rock to make an appearance in the stage. Quick thoughts?

Oscar Nominations 2009!

January 22, 2009 — 4 Comments

I do pretty good Oscar prediction nominees, it seems~ 78 of 92 from all categories (minus shorts and docus), and pretty much perfect score on major categories of acting, directing and film~

Surprises? Kate Winslet nominated for The Reader as Best Actress… No Bolt on the Best Song~~~ xD and Slumdog getting a double nod there. Wooo for Richard Jenkins!!

Not so good surprises… Waltz with Bashir snub in the animation category.

And as I predicted Benjamin Button is up for 13 nods (I said 12-14), and Slumdog is up for 10 (I said 9-10) LOL~

Check out the graphic list of nominees, or the print-friendly version that includes “film by awards” and “award # by film”.

How can we measure the popularity of a TV show or a film?

I just finished watching the latest Desperate Housewives episode… episode 100!! But I’m still DYING to see the newest episode of the last The L Word season~~~ AND, the newest Showtime Toni-Collette-starring-Diablo-Cody-written-30-min-dark-comedy~~ (yes, that’s one word) United States of Tara.

DH aired at 9pm (at the same time that TLW airs), but still no hint of the episode of TLW… why is that? Is it because TLW isn’t as popular as DH? Is it because TLW airs on Showtime? But Dexter also airs on Showtime… though I’m pretty sure Dexter takes a little while to show up~~ The fact is… I have no idea why I’m dying to watch The L Word tonight. Maybe it’s because I have to wake up early tomorrow meaning that I wouldn’t be able to watch the episode until later today. LOL Combine that with my left-over anxiety left from last season’s Molly+Shane… and lack of web comments on tonight’s episode.

I would assume that people that watch Showtime are more web savvy than the people that tend to watch ABC, so I’m sure someone that watches TLW would be able to make IT happen.

*sighs*

Now… if only I could get Showtime in Peru. Cable Magico *hint hint nudge nudge* … *punch punch* get it? And cut that crap of “Latin American version of *insert name of channel*”.

OK… back on my subject~~~ I know the more popular the film is, the faster it hits the internet. Is it the same for shows? Or does it have to do with target audience?

BAFTA Nods 2009!

January 15, 2009 — 2 Comments

Well, well~ I think I wasn’t too far off with my Oscar nod predictions with some BAFTA nominations. Biggest surprise? Kate Winslet competing against herself for Best Actress with The Reader and Revolutionary Road. Also… GREATEST thing in the world??? Best Animated Film with AMAZING nominees~~~ WALL-E, Waltz with Bashir & Persepolis! Persepolis was released in 2007, and it was up for an Oscar last time, but it gets to be nominated for a BAFTA, so  I am happy~~~ No Bolt around~~ AWESOME.

And~~~ Son of Rambow is up for The Carl Foreman Award (given to the British director, writer and/or producer for their first feature film). Anyway~~ who’s leading? Of course it’s Slumdog Millionaire with 11 nods, also leading… The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with 11.

And no worries… Anne Hathaway and Melissa Leo were probably overlooked because it’s likely their films hasn’t opened in the UK… they haven’t even been seen much in the US.

For the full list of nominees, go here~ Check back the comments for future quickie predictions.
