  • My Reasons Why the 90’s Ruled or Not – Part I

E! Entertainment Television Latin America is re-broadcasting or did a re-run of their 101 Reasons the 90’s Ruled like at 3 a.m. – that was a longggggg time ago, back when Dave Navarro was still married to Carmen Electra and sharing the same on-air space… or when Nicole Ritchie was not pregnant, even way before she went all eating-disordered on us.

I think those are the bits that I can recall at the moment. Also, one of my cousin’s favorite America’s Next Top Model contestants (if not THE favorite) – Kim… Holtz – was that her last name? You all know who I’m talking about. Was she on cycle 5?

Oh, the 90’s. Those were 10 years of my life. From the beginning of 1990 when I was turning 4 years old… until the end of 1999 when I was about to turn 14. Now, the 90’s in Peru was a whole different thing. For starters, since there wasn’t much technology, or cable TV… and the world was basically not really global – everywhere in the world was different.

Liveman - RaibumanBefore there were Power Rangers… my cousins and I (and all Peruvian kids at the time, for that matter) got Liveman. Known by the Japanese (according to imdb, anyway) as Choju Sentai Raibuman – get it? Raibu ~ Live? According to imdb, this show is listed in the year 1988… BUT, it is a Peruvian 90’s treat. At first, we had our three Liveman ~ Red Falcon, Yellow Lion and Blue Dolphin. We had the bad guys, the monsters, our giant robot. My cousin would be more than happy to elaborate on that… and then two more Liveman were added to the bunch, making the magic number FIVE!

After Liveman, we got Flashman! Though according to imdb, this is a 1986 show, we got it after Liveman. Choshinsei Furasshuman was about 5 young people (three guys, two girls) who were kidnapped when they were babies and raised and trained in different planets. I think that when they were young adults, the planets were attacked or something and they all went back to Earth – this is the bit where the bad guys and monsters arrive, and you know the drill. There was the Red Flash, the Blue Flash, the Green Flash, the Yellow Flash and the Pink Flash. =D

Another memory of childhood was Jiban, or Kidou Keiji Jiban (according to Wikipedia) – or the sucky English title, Mobile Sheriff Jiban. I mainly remember it as plain Jiban. To make things simple, Jiban was like Robocop, but the inspector or detective could switch robot-mode on and off as he wanted… and well, there were robo-monsters. The show is listed as a 1989 release… another example of the 90’s in Peru.

If we continued to take a look at shows, we notice a LOT of Japanese shows. On TNP, every afternoon we got Noppo & Gonta, also popularly known as Puedo Hacerlo Yo (I Can Do It) or by its Japanese (this is a NHK show) name Dekiru-kana which gave its ‘classical’ tune haha… Dekiru-kana, dekiru-kana – Zate Zate ho ho! – oh those were the times. I even found some other links about this show, take a look at them:

Everyone loved Noppo and Gonta. Noppo’s codename (meaning, his real name… Takami Yoshiaki) – Take look at it here… Noppo-san is a famous Japanese! and even Gonta-kun made it to the list of famous Japanese!

Maybe other favorite Japanese shows in the early 90’s in Peru were also 1, 2, 3 Matematicas (1, 2, 3 Maths) with the alien called Tap (I’m pretty sure) who came to our planet… specifically Japan, to learn more about us. He meets with some dude… I think his name was Nico. And together they went around town, counting fruits or how many fish there were in your fish tank, and learning things like that.

There was also a marionette show, you could say they were like The Muppets, only more artsy. haha – This other NHK show was called Me Lo Contaron en Japon (They Told Me That in Japan), which told different Japanese folk stories… some with demons, other with magical animals in the forest, and so on. It was a pretty nifty show, kinda reminds me of this other animated show called Shakespeare The Animated Tales – but that’s another show for the end of my 90’s.

There were other nifty shows, TNP used to broadcast… some probably not so popular. I mean, TV Peru is really lame now, nothing really cool and unique to watch… without nothing really interesting showing in it, kids juts turn to Cable TV now. I remember watching Las Fabulas del Capitan Oso Azul, or Käptn Blaubär Club from Germany (1993) – German clip hereimdb link here – Also, The Family-Ness from the UK (1984) and Penny Crayon another UK cartoon (1990) -and Los Hermanos Tucan… that’s all I could find out from that show.

Other shows from the 90’s that I remember are Count Duckula (1988) from the UK that was part of the animation programming during the broadcast of Nubeluz, which was also a big 90’s program. Count Duckula was a vegetarian vampire duck, that lived in Transylvania with servants Nanny and Igor. Another one from Nubeluz was ReBoot (1994), a Canadian show that now looks like crap. LOL’ – I didn’t watch the show, but I know it by graphics. My Canadian roommate had a lot to say about this show, haha. He didn’t like it much.

America Television, aka Canal 4 (Channel 4), had anime. Who can forget Saint Seiya (1986) known to us as Caballeros del Zodiaco – American and Canadian audiences… or at least Canadian ones could watch episodes of Knights of the Zodiac on YTV. Though, English dubbing sucks! And my cousin and I were all about watching Captain Tsubasa (1983)… like the old school version, not the new one. I mean, we loved playing Supercampeones in the garden hahaha. I still have some of my collectible D’onofrio plastic cups. There was also Candy, Japanese name in katakana Candy Candy from 1976! It’s so big here in the 90’s that many people will respond “uhh / ooh” when you mention Candy. hahaha.

Frecuencia Latina, aka Canal 2 (Channel 2), had The Storyteller… which all my life, I thought was a show! But it’s actually a mini-series, thing I learnt when I got the DVD. The Storyteller is a 9-episode-mini-series that has a storyteller that tells, most of the times, east-European folk stories with the help of the talking dog, and the amazing Jim Henson’s puppets. This mini-series is followed by a 4-episode-series The Storyteller: Greek Myths – both excellent watch.

  • Brazil’s Next Top Model

I saw my first episode of Brazil Next Top Model. Yes, the Top Model fever made it to South America. At first sight, BrNTM had really great aesthetics… so I just had to give it a peek. First, the colors are very ‘hot’ right now, with blacks, magenta and cyan… so it was hard not to be attracted to the brand.

Brazilian super-uber model Gisele Bundchen was to host, but declined – instead BrNTM’s got Fernanda Motta, who gives the show a whole lot different look than it would’ve gotten if Bundchen had accepted. Fernanda’s got dark thicker eyebrows, darker hair – she kinda reminds me of Amanda Peet. Anyone else think so? Check out her pic in the BrNTM’s site (here). She’s got a lower voice, than high-pitched Tyra Banks, who… let’s face it, has given ANTM a woo-ha-ha vibe to the show… so in the end, BrNTM seems a more serious version of America’s…………. Next…. Top…… Model. lol’

Technically, I don’t like BrNTM’s editing… seems a bit choppy at times, and sometimes it lengthens shots and *snores* – yeah, that’s basically it. While I was watching the episode, I couldn’t wait for the scene to end and get it over with. This first photoshoot was a bit boring too, and I guess I must’ve missed this bit in the subtitles, but some of the shots were f-ugly.

Judges have no personality. I’m sorry. I didn’t care much about what they were actually saying because they said the same thing over and over – I’d much rather watch Mrs. Jay talking to Tyra and Nigel… okay, Twiggy falls in the “same thing over and over” category. However, they did seem to be ‘harsher’ in their comments than the American version… kinda like how Janice Dickinson would say something, only LESS FUNNY and LESS ENTERTAINING. They would be better off showing us a report card with a checklist to see if they make it or not.

Contestants… I dunno if it’s because it’s my first time watching, but they or most of them seemed similar to me. I think there are like 2 that I can actually remember how they look. Livia, and Erycka – other than them, I can’t remember their faces or won’t tell them apart. There were like two others that had pretty faces, one of them reminded me of a friend… needs hmm, more variety?

On the subtitling part, this is on Sony – I feel like I missed a lot from the show from the subtitles. I’ve no idea why, but it is what it is. Better subs? Or maybe I’m just not used to hearing much Portuguese, but I’ve seen films in Portuguese and I know there are better subtitles than the ones you’ve been showing me, so don’t go there blaming my ability to read subs, because I know I’m good at it.

Overall, I’ve still to make my mind about this. I will probably give it another shot, but it needs to be less slow, less boring, and please keep the Brazilian Soap Opera vibe to a minimum (yeah, saw the commercial for next week’s episode). And of course, BrNTM in the end could be more talented and more serious, but THAT DOESN’T MAKE GOOD TV VIEWING.

    Here is the shortlist:

    • Better editing.
    • Cut boring shots short.
    • Add spice (a.k.a. personality) to the judges, or…
    • Change jury to a simple checklist… check!
    • More physical variety to the contestants.
    • Better subtitles.

  • Witches!

Witches is on Boomerang right now! And it’s official, Angelica Houston has to be the most wicked and most horrifying witch there ever was in the history of witches on screen.

I remember when I was a little kiddo and caught a glimpse of this film on Panamericana Television, and I got like major nightmares with that one scene of all the women turning into bald scary looking witches with long fingers. Freaks me out still. I just saw that bit again, and it looks so freaky… even when I have it on mute haha.

I haven’t gotten around to reading the book, which I have researched for the sake of getting a decent-sized picture of WitchAngelica Houston, but no such luck. I remember the film had a happy ending, though the book doesn’t… this caused like a breach between the author and the production – I thought that was worth mentioning.

I miss the good old days of puppets and animatronics.

    **EDIT**

I thought it was worth to mention Michelle Pfeiffer in Stardust. She was pretty freaky in that movie too, but doesn’t come close to Angelica Houston. Michelle Pfeiffer plays an evil very very old witch – but Houston plays an evil old and deformed monster… lol – I tell you, freaks me out.

  • A little more blogging!

October 15th is Blog Day or something… and we are supposed to get talking about the environment that day. Oh yeah, blog day is a day when all people could blog about this one topic… I think it could be interesting, yet I really don’t know what I could talk about relating to the environment, so if you’ve got an idea, let me know.

Also, I re-started watching America’s Next Top Model Cycle 7, which has just began last week in Latin America through Sony Entertainment Television. So people, if you get Sony – tune in every Wednesday at 8pm Chile/7pm Peru Colombia and support CariDee, AJ, Megg, Megan, Michelle and Amanda! Lol’

I’m gonna show-off and say “zomg! I still can’t believe Megan left a message in my MySpace” haha – she’s awesome! Megg also sent a short message, so Rock ON!!!!!!!! ^^

Also began watching The Tudors, season 1, on People and Arts – I missed the episode on Sunday, and the repeat seemed like it was censored because it kept on going to commercials at weird intervals. It was okay, though… I was expecting more. I guess I’m gonna feel like this with The Other Boleyn Girl, which is a shame – it might be a better read, than watching it on screen.

I’ve also been meaning to watch Weeds, I’ve seen the first 2 or 3 episodes, and it was really good. I was looking for the DVD, and it was really cheap, but it turns out season 1 of Weeds is only Fullscreen, instead of Widescreen – and Lionsgate has no plans on re-releasing this as a Widescreen DVD. STUPID LIONSGATE. They just want $$, so people that don’t wanna buy the Fullscreen DVDS have to get the Widescreen Blu-ray discs – now, I haven’t even started buying neither HD or Blu so I won’t start just now.

  • New Music Player

    Changed the Music Player!

Now I’m using Deezer to see how it goes =D – Right now it features the Soundtrack for the episode Once More with Feeling, from season 6 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! So check it out ^^

  • Have you seen this user?

    LOL

I am in desperate search of the following former YouTube user: buffycaz

If you have any idea who he/she is, the whereabouts, contact info… or anything. Let me know!

And, if you are buffycaz – MY GOD! I have been dying since your YouTube account got removed, and the video “bunnies!” got deleted. CRUSHED. Do you happen to have that video of Anya featuring Ballroom Blitz by Sweet? I would love you forever if you send me the video.

  • Turtlenet, Films, and so many projects… oh, my!

Aha… long time no writing nothing, eh? It’s been mainly because Internet has been really really REALLY slow. Nothing really loads, and I have to reload pages at least 10 times sometimes to open them… it’s all Telefonica’s fault. There’s a rumor around that one of their DNS servers crashed, which explains why EVERYONE’S connection has been crappy. BUT HEY! They would NEVER EVER admit it’s their fault. One day before I found out, they came over to check the connection and failed to mention this, and blamed one of my computers instead.

Anyway, this weekend’s been full of films… nothing in the theaters because Peru sucks at releasing films I want to watch, so I’ve been watching DVDs and downloads. Here are the films I watched: (more…)

  • My Favorite Actress is… WHO?

So I guess I’m not the only one who happens to say “my favorite actress is…” and then I get a big “WHO?” because people just don’t have any idea who I’m talking about. It happens to me quite a lot recently… not so much with Mr. Finnegan, who happens to know every goddamn name in the film industry, lol – actually, in his case, it happens the other way around. My big excuse is “I’m in Peru, we haven’t heard about it yet.” lol

Anyway, so I just thought I would share some of the actresses I’m watching on the big/small screen… or mainly the ones that come to mind right away. So let’s begin! (more…)
