  • Mandarin Ode to Vancouver Friends

So I had to write a small composition about my favorite city, so I picked Vancouver because it’s the only other city I can freely talk about. I wrote 130 characters — give or take — and made me realize just how much you can say on Weibo in 140 characters. Once I have a better handling of words, I might really do 140 Chinese characters music and movie reviews on there~

Mind you, this hasn’t been grammatically checked. xD

  • The Videographers Guide Ep. 1 – The Music Video

Remember the days back back in the day when MTV was about music videos, and they had a show called Making Of the video before premiering a music video? Remember when they used to announce music videos and it was important? I miss those days…

And even though these music video directors talk about the big budgets given to only top artists, it feels like it’s been ages since I’ve liked a western mainstream music video. The Rihannas and Britney Spears don’t impress me — though, I gotta admit, I didn’t mind that Katy Perry music video for Wide Awake.

I don’t mind Lady Gaga, but her last couple of MVs have been lost to me.

There are some other music videos that are not so mainstream that have indeed peaked my interest… but I’m taking my eye candy — all of it — from crack Kpop music videos. Because… you know When Kpop Went Beyond American Pop.

The 2NE1s, Big Bangs, and other idol groups with their glossy and marvelous candy music videos infect my eyes and earworm into my brain. It’s hard for Korea to actually put some emphasis into their creatives and they should, so we must work with them on that. Otherwise… how will people know about directors Hwang Soo Ah and Cha Eun Taek?

Your music videos matter, Korea. Pull yourself together!

  • El Mundo de Beakkkkkkkkkkkman!

Googling about (as always), I ran into this Best of Beakman’s World collection [1], split into 6-part 10-min clips~ lo and behold! Complete episodes of Beakman’s World Español Latino dubs [1]!!! Because El Mundo de Beakman just melted my brain with the idea that the dubbing voice of Will Smith (Juan Alfonso Carralero, who just happened to be on TV last week as the voice of Viggo Mortensen in A History of Violence xD) was ALSO the voice of Beakman.

Plus, there’s also Laura Torres. O_O

I miss children programming like Beakman’s World — I know there are a few “science educational” children programs out there, but all of them lack the sense of fun and wonder that Beakman had. :(

This is another reason why the 90s rocked so much.

    Also… RIP, my dear Ratson.

  • Okaasan to Issho: Itou Mayu, Bye–bye~

I haven’t really been properly following Okaasan to Issho — this means I haven’t been practicing my Japanese much — so I was really REALLY surprised: first, when they changed the weather mascots so soon. I suspect it didn’t suit well with the whole Tohoku Earthquake. They seemed to have lasted just a couple of years compared to some of the others…

Anyway, the second thing that surprised me was… Itou Mayu is no longer there! Apparently she did her last show by the end of March. Sadly, I haven’t found any clip of that online.

  • Il était une fois… les technologies du passé.

Ahhh, there’s no better way to feel old than having kids say or do things to make you feel old. Yesterday, in fact, I was hanging out with my cousin and a kid asked him whether in “his days” there was Wii.

    LOL

This clip also reminds me of The Past Decade According to Kids.

Sorry, no subs… but pretty self-explanatory.

  • The Story of Pentecost by Dan Stevers

It’s an After Effects  shadow puppet show!! xD

Now, I’m not really religious, but I think this type of animation… where they kinda teach you about things – they’re really interesting. It’s sorta on the line of the whole Shakespeare The Animated Tales, or the series for Religions of the World. Kiddos should watch this stuff. Okay, this one’s not as serious… but at least it gives you an idea of what’s Pentecost, right?

  • Currently Watching – Aug2010 Edition

This is what I’m currently watching… on the air. Nothing to do with keeping up with any programs, though I should really find some time to watch Lost, True Blood, and still need to catch up on Mad Men S3. But alas, my Dead Like Me box-set just arrived – I didn’t know it came with the tv movie xD – so I guess I will be watching that the whole month.

    – The Big C – for Laura Linney… and I love anything Showtime, most the times.

Didn’t love the pilot, the commercial I posted had pretty much all the funny parts… but I liked the interactions. My favorite line was that one with Gabby Sidibe. About being skinny and a bitch, or fat and jolly. Coz it’s so true. LOL

    About:
Laura Linney plays a woman diagnosed with… what appears to be final stages of some cancer. She is considered boring by her son and husband, but wants to be the one staining her sofa with juice/wine. She also wants to eat onions, LOL Plus, her brother needs to take a shower. xD

  • Ghostwriter on DVD

    Well, color me surprise~

Years ago when Discovery Kids was for kids, and it was on Channel 84 or something, there was a show called Ghostwriter, which told the story of a bunch of kids — I thought they were old kids back then LOL — that solved mysteries with the help of some type of ghost that could only communicate through writing.

Funny thing is, I saw it dubbed in Spanish… so watching it in English was a different experience.

As you can see, the first season has just been released on DVD. So why hasn’t The Adventures of Shirley Holmes been released yet? I demand it!

I have just gone through the first chapter, titled Ghost Story, which in itself contains like 5 episodes of nearly 30min. It was a bizarre experience… remembering what it was about, but then listening to the English. For once, I never knew Alex and Gabby (#1, who was a better Gabby anyway) talked Spanish… I mean, Spanglish at home. Never crossed my mind, because to me… they always spoke Spanish. LOL

While watching it, I also felt this would be a great series to revamp. Even though I am so very against remaking things, I think Ghostwriter would be pretty awesome in a new version… with slightly less 90’s Ghostwriter graphics, and much more natural dialog. Plus, nothing wrong with remaking educational programs, right? But then again, this is not a money-maker, so people aren’t interested in a revamp.

This show hasn’t age as well as Shirley Holmes has, but granted… Shirley is like 5 years ahead of Ghostwriter, and has a different budget, and it isn’t supposed to be educational.

  • Japanese and Chinese Readers/Translators for Chrome

I have been using Rikaichan and Perapera-kun for about 2 years know, and it’s really improved my reading skills. Though, I am still lazy to remember how to actually read the kanji out-loud. LOL

But now I have been using Google Chrome a bit more than when it first came out, because it’s faster and it’s just there. However, since I browse so many Japanese and Chinese sites, I always end up browsing through them with Firefox because of my add-ons. LUCKILY! Google Chrome has add-ons now!

Rikaikun is like a lighter version of Rikaichan, works just like it.

and Zhong Wen, which is pretty much a light version of Perapera.
    thank you, Chinese Hacks~

All I’m missing is a Koren one, which Perapera said they were working on. I wonder what happened to that business… haven’t seen updates since then.
