Oscar Nominations 2009!

I do pretty good Oscar prediction nominees, it seems~ 78 of 92 from all categories (minus shorts and docus), and pretty much perfect score on major categories of acting, directing and film~

Surprises? Kate Winslet nominated for The Reader as Best Actress… No Bolt on the Best Song~~~ xD and Slumdog getting a double nod there. Wooo for Richard Jenkins!!

Not so good surprises… Waltz with Bashir snub in the animation category.

And as I predicted Benjamin Button is up for 13 nods (I said 12-14), and Slumdog is up for 10 (I said 9-10) LOL~

Testing my Luck on Oscar Nom Predictions~

I NEVER EVER do nomination predictions… and considering my Golden Globes winner predictions, consider this attempt of mine at predicting a bit rubbish.

Oscar nominations are in about 9 days… and BAFTA nominations are in 2 days. O.O

With that said, I also found another problem… not knowing what films are considered withing the date range, so I am ONLY using films that are listed on IMDb as 2008 productions.

Also, I’m predicting almost all categories, including technical awards like Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects – except Documentary Short, Short Film Animated, Short Film Live Action… because I haven’t seen any shorts. Also no prediction on Documentary Feature. Is Man on Wire a lock on that???

Awards Here and There and Everywhere…

Well… during the past week, every time I’d wake up, there’d be another award nomination announced. Beginning of last week, it began with the Spirit Awards, then Grammy nominations…

Then there’s the interminable Top10 Films list around… then there was the National Board of Review’s announcement~ They named Slumdog Millionaire as best film, and included Let the Right One In as one of the Top5 Foreign Films…

Apparently the Satellite Awards nominees were announced on Nov30 –

Today, the Critics’ Choice Nominations were in – There’s a lot of love for Milk, and Benjamin Button… which will probably lead through award season, including Academy Awards. There’s also a lot of love for Anne Hathaway, who will possibly include an Oscar nod for Best Actress. Love for Meryl Streep in Doubt, as well… but apprently no love for Kate Winslet, who was a favorite of many award sites throughout the year as Best Actress for Revolutionary Road, but no love for the film in any of the previously mentioned awards.

There is also love for Let the Right One In, that appears in various lists as either Top Foreign Film, or Top Films of the Year…. I must get the DVD as soon as it’s out.

Almost that Time of the Year Again…

With Independent Spirit Award Nominations just around the corner (Dec. 2) – Awards season pretty much begins~

I haven’t seen many (if any) films to fuzz about… yet. Studios say they trust their films, and all are hoping for December releases. This wasn’t the case last year, when Julie Christie (April) and Marion Cotillard (June) released in the US their films and swept awards.

Waltz with Bashir - PosterPretty much everyone is hoping and fuzzing about The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I am too – because let’s face it, it looks cool… it has a good cast, and a great director. From what I could read, this will be the movie to watch… it will be IT.

Nothing else can’t be said, on my behalf…

The animation category will undeniably go to WALL-E, which was good. However, wouldn’t it be interesting if there were other animated films? One of them could be the Israeli-German-French animated production of Waltz with Bashir. I have heard interesting things about it… but could it surprise Oscar watchers? Unlikely. But it will be a good change… just like I thought Les Tiplettes de Belleville should have won, or Persepolis last year~~

Waltz with Bashir, just from the trailer, looks visually interesting. Definitely different to other animated films in subject, theme, and possibly even different animation approach. I also think this poster on the right looks way more intriguing than the other colored poster. Nonetheless, from the same trailer you could see some funkyness with the animation, as if they had used Flash on some sequences (like some of those MTV crappy animated shorts)… and some others looked just splendid.

Shikashika @ Cinema Lounge in LA

So I am a member at Film Independent, and I just got my monthly issue.

The independent Spirit Awards will begin taking submissions from tomorrow, August 6th until
September 15th (early deadline) or
October 7th (final deadline).

With nominations being announced on December 2, right on time for award season… and the award ceremony will be held on February 21, one day before the Academy Awards which will be held on February 22.

Okay, onto the topic~ This month… this August 19th to be exact. Film Independent wil be showing Shikashika in their Cinema Lounge program. This month program includes these short films:

  • 10 Things You Can Do to the Earth (According to Satan)

  • Shikashika

Film in Peru, this rhythmic portrait documentary reveals the process of making a colorful shave ice called Shikashika.

Which made me, and other people, wonder if there had been other heavily Oscar Winner projects. I can’t really think of anything at the top of my head, but I was checking IMDb (and got side-tracked a little), and I didn’t come up with anything. Hahahaha.

From just trailers, I thought Burn After Reading did a pretty filled Academy Award credited film. Let’s see… I had to check some of the credits, but I don’t think it does as Oscar-studded as Nine. Here goes~~

Oscar 2008: Best Short Films Animated Nominees

Back in January and February, I blogged a lot about the Academy Awards films, actors and people~ I had a list of the films I was to watch and had it all highlighted in colors of films:

  • I have seen
  • I wanted to see
  • Repeated film in another category (lol)

I didn’t necessarily manage to watch all the films before awards, but I did watch a majority… minus most the films in the Documentary category, and shorts (live action, animation and documentary). But today it all changed, because I saw all the Animated Short Films, and I will share them with you (especially Julyssa, who is most likely to want to watch them also). The only clip that is not complete is Piotrus i Wilk (Peter & the Wolf), which ended up winning the category.

The Oscar Goes to… Europe!

Marion wins Best Actress OscarAcademy Awards are over, and here comes a new year waiting. But I must admit that the big winner of the night was Europe. All 4 acting awards went out of the continent:

Daniel Day-Lewis (England) was named Best Actor, while Javier Bardem (Spain) was named Best Supporting Actor. Marion Cotillard (France) was named Best Actress, and Tilda Swinton (England) was named Best Supporting Actress.

Art Direction went to Dante Ferreti and Francesca Lo Schiavo (Italy) for Sweeney Todd, a co-production of the USA with the UK. Makeup went to France with La Vie en Rose, while Costume Design went to Elizabeth: The Golden Age, a UK/Germany/France co-production.

Moreover, the big technical prizes went to Europe as well. Golden Compass got the Visual Effects nod, a UK/USA co-production. While The Bourne Ultimatum, a US/Germany co-production grabbed the awards for Film Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.

Dario Marianelli (Italy) won Best Score for Atonement, a UK/France co-production. While Ireland won for Best Original Song with Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (Czechoslovakia).

UK/Poland won Short Film Animated with Peter & the Wolf, and France once again dominated in the Short Film Live Action with Les Mozart des Pickpockets. And Juno, that apparently is a USA/Canada/Hungary co-production. x’D

The biggest happy announcement for me was hearing Marion’s name! I went nuts over it, and had me teary. I first thought Marion had Oscar written all over her face when I got to see La Vie en Rose in Sweden. It was such an amazing experience to have watched it with Julyssa, and it’s even more amazing that we both felt the same. That Marion HAD to win.

During the night, there wasn’t really any upsets. I guessed 18/24 of the categories, and felt that the most bitter surprise during the ceremony was I Met the Walrus loosing Best Animated Short. Because, really, motion graphics rock my world. While, Tilda Swinton and The Golden Compass winning were good surprises.
