Update on My Favorite Films

April 3, 2010 — 5 Comments

A few hours ago, I got back from watching Let the Right One In at the cinema. This is the 7th time I’ve watched the film in what… 2 years? [Twice as a screener, twice at the theater and three time on my DVD] And I still can’t seem to get enough of it. So thinking about whether or not I should add the film to my Top10 Favorite Films of all Time, made me remember that I have updated my Top10 Faves slightly already.

Considering I saw Memories of Matsuko less than 2 years ago (1.7 years according to Flixster), and I’ve also seen it 7 times. It’s quickly climbed up from spot #8 to #3~ While Grave of the Fireflies climbed up from #10 to #5.

What film in my Top10 should I displace? Jurassic Park is still in a special place in my heart, and Donnie Darko… hmm… or will Moulin Rouge! make a disappearing act? I need to watch these three films again and re-evaluate my Bottom5. I’m conflicted~~~ xD

  1. A) this reminds me I still have to do my Auteurs profile :)
    B) I have this arbitrary rule that my all time favorite films list will only include movies that are at least 10 years old. I think it’s good to give a movie some time to see if it still holds up. The thing that separates good movies from the truly great is that the great movies hold up for years and years and years even as movies we once loved become dated and tiresome.

Having said that, if you’ve seen LTROI 7 times in two years and you still love it, there’s probably room for it in your Top 10. Not sure what you could get rid of though.

  2. 10 years old, or 10 years since you first saw them? xD
Could Casablanca be included if I saw it about a year or two ago?

My Top10 Fave rule is, I must have seen it 5 times at least…
I’m a little obsessive with Dancer in the Dark, which I’ve seen
at least 30 times… counting with TV re-runs xD

  3. The movie should be 10 years old.

I’m not a big movie-rewatcher guy except for Kubrick and The Coen Bros and classics like Casablanca.

I had never seen Dancer until a few months ago and kind of fell in love with it.

  4. I’ve grown more prone to re-watching films, as I tend to watch films and suggest others to watch them, but most of the time I have to make sure they watch them… I remember I watched 4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days as a screener, and when it finally opened locally, I went to the theater with my dad. Then I suggested to some of my friends they should check it out that same week, because chances were they were taking it out in a week or so… instead they decided to watch Sex and the City which had opened the same week.

I have a whole history with Dancer.

[…] I was left with a shivering tingle. Obviously, it became my fave film of 2008, and I have seen it seven times already… loving the slightly unconventional love story, and presenting a wonderful character such as […]
