For those of you who don’t know, The Adventures of Shirley Holmes was a show for kids that dealt with Shirley, the great-niece of famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. She was a bright and curious young girl with some emotional and social issues, that are triggered by the mysterious disappearance of her mother, Dr. Joanna Holmes, in Rwanda.
We follow Shirley, three or four years into her mom’s disappearance, when she finally meets Bo Sawchuk, a bad-boy-turned-friend and Watson-like companion to Shirley. Together they solve mysteries dealing with insurance fraud, kidnappings, alien abductions, illegal immigrants, conspiracies, and deception – just to name a few… all ending in young Shirley learning something about herself, and other people.
I watched this show when I was just a kiddo, but it never crossed my mind that it might be a Canadian production, like many of the shows I used to watch, until I decided to go away to study… to Canada. Overall, the show is really smart for a kids show… and the standard of shows today. If you are a fan of CSI, you will probably see young Shirley as a Youth CSI – she looks for prints, bags evidence, and checks the scene of the crime, but adding an “edge” by using hidden implanted cameras, microphones, camera/pen gadgets and sticking her nose where no one wants her. lol’
I think the best part of the show is her rivalry with nemesis, Molly Hardy, who is also a bright young girl with problems… the sociopath problems. She is a great villain because despite being just a girl, she manipulates people, so she can be in control… no matter what. She’ll go anywhere and get rid of anyone who interferes with her plans, but no one knows that, except Shirley and Bo… that’s why they are often targeted by Ms. Hardy.
ANYWAY~
What’s up with the DVDs?? Lol, YTV and Forefront and whatever other company that deals with distribution should be already thinking about releasing this show… I mean, come on! All shows are being released, why not this one? There was also rumors about a movie… it’s been so long – more than 10 years since the first episode, but it’s an interesting idea, and everyone’s moved on… So here it is, WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Meredith Henderson was Shirley
After finishing season 4 of Shirley Holmes, she worked on MythQuest, and guest-starred in 1-800-Missing, Queer as Folk, and many other shows. She played Shania in Shania: A Life in Eight Albums, and recently finished The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
You can check info on her work on her IMDB.com page, since her website has mysteriously just GONE… disappeared just like Shirley’s mom.

.
John White was Bo
After season 4, John White did shows like Real Kids, Real Adventures, MTV’s Undressed, among others. He was also on the Canadian TV movie, Prom Queen: The Marc Hall Story, and straight to video, American Pie series.
Check his IMDB.com page, where you’ll find links to his work.

Brendan Fletcher was Sterling “Stink” Patterson
Brendan has done A LOT, since his Shirley days. From numerous TV movies, to guest-starring in shows like DaVinci’s Inquest, Millenium, Jake 2.0, CSI, Tru Calling, The Collector or Supernatural… his film credits include the Canadian films, Five Senses, Eighteen and Everyone, or horror films, Alone in the Dark, Ginger Snaps 2 & 3.
You can check a list of his work on his IMDB.com page. I suggest watching Five Senses for drama lovers, and Ginger Snaps for horror fans. And just the heads up, Eighteen and Everyone also star Canadian actress, Carly Pope!
God, this took forever to write. Good nites~
It has come to my attention that YTV has begun re-broadcasting The Adventures of Shirley Holmes once again… so check YTV if you’re in Canada!
