34th Japan Academy Prize Noms

December 17, 2010 — 7 Comments

First, let me get this out of the way: All the foreign nominations are American films, which includes Avatar, Toy Story 3, Hurt Locker, Inception and Invictus. Those along are a mixed bag for me xD Invictus was rather insipid, wouldn’t you say? And to include Avatar in the same list as Toy Story 3 is… hmm, rather a pity xD

The 34th Japan Academy Prize is led by Sang-il Lee’s Akunin (Villain) with 15 nods in 13 categories. Followed by Yoji Yamada’s Otouto (Yougner Brother/About her Brother) and Takashi Miike’s 13 Assassins with 11 nods. Rounding up the best pictures is Izuru Narushima’s Kokou no Mesu (A Lone Scalpel) with 5 nods.

And forgive the bias, but Yu Aoi got a nod for Supporting Actress xD

  1. No love for Caterpillar…..
    I'M FUCKING DISAPPOINTED!

    • Well, at least they did nominated Shinobu Terajima. In the case they hadn't, it would be pretty effing disappointing. Though, I'd like to know whether the Japanese Academy nominates her, since they are a much more conservative group, I believe.

By the way, you haven't emailed the transcript for the interview with Onishi, have you?

  2. So amy, you saw Otouto…was Yu deserving of a nomination?

    • ahhh, you're challenging my fan-side with my critical. To me, Otouto was all about Shofukutei (mostly) and Yoshinaga. But I haven't seen any of the other nominations to assess whether or not any doesn't deserve that spot.

From the Japanese films I was able to watch this 2010, the only "supporting actress" I could pin-point would be Ayumi Ito for Bandage, even though Otouto is a much better film.

  3. “All the foreign nominations are American films, which includes Avatar, Toy Story 3, Hurt Locker, Inception and Invictus”

the usual streamrolling pack of crap that is plaguing festivals, awards ceremonies and so forth… depressing.

  4. Eventually saw Otouto, yet another great Yamada drama.
Bearing in mind that Yu Aoi's role is just a supporting one, I must say that I was quite impressed by her perf: solid, emotionally spot-on. It's true that Shofukutei and Yoshinaga are truely excellent (they have the leads) but Yuu Aoi's screen presence is quite important (we see her way more than Kase) and her acting flawless. I'm glad she was in this much praised movie.
