Shunji Iwai Fake Criterion Collection

November 14, 2010 — 13 Comments

I was re-watching the DVD for Swallowtail Butterfly that I bought after watching the film on YouTube xD – and Because I’m cheap, I bought the Hong Kong version, when the Japanese version comes with English subtitles. I don’t think it’s the DVD per se, but the way it was shot. I don’t really know what it is, it’s scratchy, and it could certainly be because the film is kinda old. However, I would like to see a clean better release by Criterion… of all of Shunji Iwai written and directed films~

Fake Criterion Collection: Shunji Iwai Collection - Love Letter

Fake Criterion Collection: Shunji Iwai Collection - Swallowtail Butterfly

Fake Criterion Collection: Shunji Iwai Collection - All About Lily Chou Chou

Fake Criterion Collection: Shunji Iwai Collection - Hana & Alice

I think my favorite covers are between Hana & Alice and Love Letter. I like the “softness” or maybe I’m just more in the mood for sakura blossoms, and snowy landscapes. I was actually gonna go with the ballet theme, but it made it seem like a darker theme and not at all bubbly… though my first concept had to do with Alice’s card deck, but I couldn’t find a perfect card.

Of course, added to the MUBI list, and Flickr set~

  1. Good job :)
I was thinking about designing my version of them too!

-Too bad, that’s a great idea for an H&A Criterion cover. I would have liked to see that one!

If it was up to me to design the Lily Chou-Chou Criterion cover, I would use a close up picture of Yu’s hand holding the money she got after her first prostitution….you know, the money she eventually throws in Yuichi’s face. If you bought the Lily Chou-Chou dvd, there’s a picture of what I’m talking about included in the paper insert. I always thought that picture would make a great dvd cover or something.

    • I really think the idea of the card really would have worked if somehow we could get that deck of card with the moving Alice kissing the White Rabbit. Without it, it’s just a regular card.

For the Lily cover, I thought of using the green apple by the end of the film. Maybe I’ll do darker versions of Lily and Alice xD

  3. Hey Amy, in case u didn’t know the big news : http://www.lilychouchou.jp/ (maybe I just told u already… i forgot such things). There’s an excerpt of the single on their youtube channel
