Modern Family

February 1, 2010 — 1 Comment

I had seen a couple of commercials promoting Modern Family, which I thought were kind of funny, so I decided to look the series up and give it a try. It was a surprise to learn that each episode only lasts about 20min. (as a 30min. show, just to show you how much commercials American shows have), but those will be the funniest 20 minutes of your day.

Modern Family just tells the story of that… a modern-day family, starting with Jay (Ed O’Neil) and his second wife Gloria (Colombian actress Sofia Vergara), and her kid… old-soul Manny.

Then there’s Jay’s eldest daughter Claire (Julie Bowen), her loser husband but “cool dad” Phil (Ty Burrell), their 3 kids… not so bright Haley… not so bright Luke… and the one picking on them for not being bright, Alex.

And finally, there’s Jay’s younger son Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), his “mother bear” boyfriend Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), and their newly-adopted Vietnamese baby Lily.

By the first episode, it had me literally laughing at the top of my lungs, which hasn’t happened for a long time. I had so much fun watching it over the weekend, that I’ve already caught up with the 13 first episodes, and I’m waiting for the remaining episodes.

Stonestreet, playing Mitchell’s boyfriend, is hilarious, even though he seems to be kind of normal compared to the rest of the nearly neurotic characters. He also brings balance to Mitchell’s snobbish butt by teaching him to shop at Costco, and is the pissed off gay clown saving Mitchell’s butt at the gas station. He’s my favorite character.

So this is one of the new shows you should be watching… you know, instead of like… Ghost Whisperer or some other bad show.

Of course, if Mob read this blog every day, he would comment “I told you so,” and told me so he did. He pestered me about watching Galactica all 2009, and I began watching it then, but the first season took me ages to finish, due to anger issues. However, I got over them and watched the second season, the third and the fourth.

This is my Galactica advise. Watch the four seasons.

I was told to begin BS with the Miniseries, which was pretty rocking but made season 1 a bit redundant, in my opinion.

I was told to skip the first set of webisodes, and watch Razor… the Galactica film, which didn’t do anything for me. A lot of fans liked it, but it didn’t do much for me.

Finally, I was told to watch the final set of webisodes, which weren’t bad, but didn’t do much for me either.

So just watch the full four seasons, and you’d be plenty happy. At least, that’s what I think from the point of view of a non-fan-girl.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way. I had a love/hate relationship with most of the characters of the show, that’s only due to the great writers of the series who managed to turn this characters into real people with issues and mistakes. Obviously, some of those writers were also involved on writing for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Duh!

There were a lot of transformations on this storyline. On season one, it was all “yeah! The cylons are the bad guys! kill’em all!” However, once the humans (led by the idiot (though fairly elected – what does that say about the people and demoCRAZY) Baltar) settled on New Caprica, and the Cylons establish a sort of… er… forceful government, but a government nonetheless, in which they wanted both Cylons and humans to live together… I could not bring myself feel pity for the human “rebels” ~~~ more like terrorists, I say.

And that’s the thing about Battlestar… and good sci-fi, you can always relate the stuff that’s happening in there with real-world issues. And let me tell you, Battlestar had a lot of good political talks. Ethical and moral issues, and it’s never black and white, and they point it out for you “sometimes you gotta do the smart thing, over the right thing.” At least that’s how I felt during the talk with the idealistic idiot, Fat Lee Adama. A lesson the disillusioned idealist Gaeta didn’t learn on time.

Of course, there’s also the characters… or should I say the female characters? Because, let me tell you that I was annoyed at 98% of the male characters. Except for maybe Admiral Adama… LOL. The biggest turn-around for me was Colonel Tigh whose attitude I didn’t like at the beginning, but ended up one of my faves. But like I said… the guys were mostly idiots! While the girls were kinda rocking, even when they were acting crazy.

Catherine on DVD?

December 30, 2009 — 3 Comments

Kinda?

*giggles* sorry, that cover makes me laugh.

It looks like Francophone-DVD distributor Imavision has released the first season. It seems like it’s 10 discs, but I can find no details… I mean, it looks like the first season, but it says the first part, which could be more than the first season… explaining the 10 discs and the expensive price tag.

Also, no info on subtitles or captioning.

This can be purchase through the CBC Shop Online for $59.99 CND (I suppose), at Imavision.com for $69.95 CND, and over at Archambault.ca for $69.99 CND — they do free shipping (international, I dunno) with orders over $39.

They’re a bit pricey. I wonder if I should get someone to get them for me. I expect all DVD material to at least be captioned in its original language… no info here. If anyone does, share!

Finally got the chance to watch the second chapter of Camouflage fully translated. Why? One, because I didn’t have the time, and when I had the time ViiKii wasn’t letting me stream.

So… anyway! I’m pimping subscribers! I want more people to subscribe, and I guess most of the visitors are coming here for their Yu Aoi fix, so please. Add this blog to your Google, or your Yahoo…. or just add the blog’s Feed to any reader you use, that way you can keep up with your Yu Aoi reading. ;P

Okay, pimp time is done.

BARAIRO NO HIBI, or Rose-colored Days is the 2nd 3-episode chapter of Yu Aoi’s Camouflage, which aired a LONG time ago. The title seems to be a play on words on “rose-colored g lasses” (aka. pink-colored glasses) which refers to seeing something nicer than it normally is. A common word that is often used (and I often read about 5 years ago) was delusion. Delusional people aren’t really crazy per se, but they are living in an illusion that they’ve created.

In this case, Yu’s character, Makoto.

I received a notification on my email that Amazon was going to begin selling The Best of Rocko’s Modern Life: Volume 3 this week. First of all, I wasn’t aware that Volume 1 and Volume 2 were on the market. Then I read properly. It’s not an official release! It’s on DVD-R, so they won’t play on many DVD players. And they’re edited! And you gotta pay over $20USD for those volumes.

So that’s about $60 for just three volumes.
The Best of Rocko’s Modern Life – Volume 1
The Best of Rocko’s Modern Life – Volume 2
The Best of Rocko’s Modern Life Volume 3 (2 Disc set)

Now, is that fair? As a consumer, and as a fan of the show?

No, I don’t think so.

So this is a link to the complete 4 seasons of Rocko’s Modern Life.

Daria DVD News Spazz~~~

November 21, 2009 — Leave a comment

On July, I posted this about the Daria DVD.

I just got an email update with more info, which sound spazz-tastic~

  1. It sounds as though, rather than put the episodes out season-by-season, they are looking to put the whole series out at once, including the movies.
  2. There will be goodies, though which ones, I am not sure. However, the Sarcastathons and the specials were mentioned, and it looks as though they are going through ANY footage to find superfluous Daria appearances (like on TV talk shows).
  3. The commercial bumpers will be preserved, and in their rightful places.
  4. The episodes will be from the original masters, so no Noggin jujitsu cuts.
  5. The DVDs could come out as early as spring 2010. I’m going to play it conservative and still claim that they won’t be available until late 2010. For outside of the United States, it will be closer to 2011.

Also, apparently… for licensing reasons — there will be music replacement. However, it appears that they will replace some songs with covers, so they are trying to make changes not too noticeable. As for licensing explanations, old shows that used music prominently are having issues with their DVD release because the permits they used on the original TV broadcast don’t apply when releasing the music on DVD.

New shows don’t suffer from it, because the different licensing issues are dealt when shooting the show.

Popular’s Glee!

September 16, 2009 — 5 Comments

Oh. My. God.

I recognized it in the first minutes of the first episode. Quarterback wants to sing in the choir/drama club? It had to be, and it was! Produced and created (at least one of them) by Popular’s Ryan Murphy! I lost it! Glee is almost like Popular, but with more budget… – I smell cult hit, or maybe two seasons. Glee is not for everyone, but it should be.

Glee

I was so excited after watching the first two episodes, that I went straight to the boards and behold! Some people were suggesting Mary Cherry should make an appearance xD – But there’s been an evolution from Murphy’s previous works… Glee feels like Popular combined with an edge of Running with Scissors and everything else Murphy’s done between then and now. LOL

Also… Popular meets Running with Scissors meets High School Musical? I dunno how this much music will play into a full season, but doesn’t bother me at the moment… Go watch it. It’s Ryan Murphy.

So I started re-watching Mysterious Ways the past week. It’s hilarious how I can’t get away from Harmony, ever. The other day was too much that I went back to PK to talk about it xD “ships that remind you of Harmony” xD It’s funny how I never noticed how I shipped Declan and Miranda.

Declan is a total adventurer dork. Miranda is a super intelligent goth. I love them together. And they totally flirted, at least Miranda did… xD but that episode, man! The Greater Good episode~~~

*swoon!* Swoon not that Miranda almost died, LOL’ xD But *swoon* how Declan put Miranda ahead of all humanity~~~ He had the chance of curing and saving everyone in the world, and he chose her. xD And she woke up, even though we knew that Miranda didn’t want to be resuscitated, and she saw him. She grabbed his hand, and didn’t want to let go. I loved it! xD – You’ll love it too~~~

It’s Mysterious Ways!

August 27, 2009 — 1 Comment

The year, 2000… I think.

Mysterious Ways - Season 1 - Title

Anyway, for any fans of the shows, I just found the torrent for Mysterious Ways, that Canadian (probably shot on Vancouver) show with Adrian Pasdar (who is now married to Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks) with Rae Dawn Chong (who my mother refuses to believe is Chinese, LOL) and Alisen Down (playing the geeky and awkward Miranda) – by the by, I’m pretty sure I was a Declan/Miranda kinda shipper… ~ I’m telling you, it’s all about the geek.

Also, don’t mind the title sequence. It’s a really REALLY bad title sequence, super 90’s and cheese~ xD

Anyway, I’m posting the links to the torrents because there are no DVDs… I doubt there will be any releases since it’s such a tiny show… and Canadian. Canadian programming sucks when it comes to releasing on DVD.

It’s a little over 15Gb for both seasons, but it’s worth it if you want the show. Remember, the show getting a DVD release it’s a long shot. Better download while you can. And if the torrent goes dead (and there are still no DVD releases), you can leave a message to request re-seed.
