  • The 100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years – Oh, Really?

    Entertainment Weekly has finally put up their list of Greatest Characters online.

    Excuse me as I What? – Bernie Mac over The Bride from Kill Bill, or Lisbeth Salander from Millennium Trilogy? Will Smith’s Hancock over Whilhelmina from Ugly Betty? With no traces of Wolverine? Seriously? Hancock over Wolverine? And don’t tell me it’s because Wolverine is an old character, because Tony Stark (Iron Man) made it to the list… and he’s not what we would exactly call from the “last 20 years” either.

    The list is questionable… not only for the inclusions and omissions, also for placing. tsk tsk.

    As much as I love Sue Sylvester (and Jane Lynch), I think she should be lower than characters like House or Dexter. Also… Rachel Green on the Top10? Over guys like Jack Bauer from 24? And Edward Cullen from Twilight over freaking Don Draper from Mad Men???? Really? Or even Miranda Priestly from Devils Wears Prada?

    But gotta give it to you for at least including some of the names. You know like Starbuck. Or Stewie from Family Guy… Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, and Edward Scissorhands — if you didn’t count, that’s TWO Johnny Depps right there~~~ Then there’s Hannibal Lecter, The Joker, and Buffy.

    Been reading a lot about her, so now it’s peaked my interest.

    Not gonna write anything about her [but you can google her, if you want], because she’s part of the main article I’m writing for YAM, which will be coming out in almost 2 weeks.

  • Robin Hood is a Lot of Very Little

    First of all, “Hi, hello, Cate Blanchett as Lady Marion”

    You were my favorite part of the film. Even though I was all like “Lady Marion in an armor?” I still liked it. She was multi-purpose that Lady Marion. She changed horseshoes, and took charge of the crops, and talked to the priests and bishops like it was her business. Even though it totally didn’t fit the period, I was all over it.

  • Ip Man: The Movies

    Dude! Bad-ass with a heart.

    Ip Man, for the people who don’t know, is Bruce Lee’s martial arts master.

    Though, from the little info I could read on the real Ip Man, they do make him look like a total hero here. I mean, you watch the first Ip Man film [semi-biographical], and he’s painted like a real nice man who likes to spar with other martial artists. He’s just a family man, and good to everyone, but he does sure love his martial arts.

    Ip Man is the hero. He is the man, and this is a total blockbuster, but with a lot more heart. I teared up a bit in parts, and I’m not even supposed to feel “patriotic” about it. But this is not about that, right? Wow, Ip Man… or I mean, Donnie Yen can totally kick ass.

    I suspect my grandfather would have enjoyed this movie very much. My dad sure did.

    And because Ip Man 2 [pretty much not biographical] has just opened in China and some other territories (including Australia, damn those lucky SOBs xD), Ip Man has been battling it out on the box office against Iron Man. However, despite Ip Man 2 not being as good as the original Ip Man… it totally beats Iron Man 2 to a pulp… in quality, not in box office power.

    Yeah, sure. Ip Man 2 is a little bit Rocky and a little No Retreat, No Surrender — and all the many fighting movies — but I can’t deny Ip Man has a lot of heart. I mean, can’t get more patriotic than fighting to “defend all Chinese culture.” How was the line? Something like you can put me down, but not all Chinese martial arts?

    And oh man, Bruce Lee was such a total cocky child actor.

    *sighs* if he only were alive.

  • Yu Aoi for Corner Pastry Shop

    It seems Yu died and went to heaven. LOL

    It’s her in a pastry shop! And a new movie announcement!!

    Yogashiten Coin de Rue (洋菓子店コアンドル) [KOAN DA RU] – seriously, why the Katakana? – was shot last year between October and December, and post-production will be completed this month for a possible release by the end of the year.

    Starring alongside Yosuke Eguchi, and directed by Yoshihiro Fukagawa, it tells the story… hmm, I’ll let Nippon Cinema explain much better than I can.

    Eguchi will play Tomura, a legendary pastry chef who was renowned for his sweets before suddenly dropping out of industry circles. Aoi will play a cake-maker’s daughter who traveled from Kagoshima to Tokyo to chase after a boyfriend. She gets a job at a popular Tokyo shop called “Pastry Coin de Rue” where Tomura is a regular customer. Through their interactions she experiences personal growth, eventually learning the importance of enjoying life and not abandoning your dreams.

    Wow, how many projects it is now?

  • First Still for Let Me In

    I am not convinced.

    Do not like the still, and I’m pretty sure it’s because of the color palette, and why does Moretz look so old? She has an old-people’s face. She’s missing an air of innocence that Lena had on her Eli.

    But then again… that’s me picking, right?

  • Blue finally getting fansubbed?

    Well, according to visitor Bill in this comment, his team is working on it.

    Of course, me being one of the most vocal fans of Mikako Ichikawa — if not the most… seriously, you probably google her name and find my posts or images from the website — have been wanting to watch this since I got it. One afternoon, I tried watching it, but I felt the film was very dialog-driven, so I decided to stop the film and wait for someone to be kind enough… so thank you, Bill, for accepting my subs request.

    I have seen a bunch of people, on my search for subtitles, that have been talking about the lack of subtitles for this film. Let me tell you, Mikako Ichikawa… so underrated.

    Sure, she IS kinda creepy as lil’ sis Kumi in Memories of Matsuko, but in the end she wins us over with that final Okaeri — or is that just me? — as Matsuko goes up the stairs. *sighs* However, did you get to see Ichikawa as Tamaki Hiroshi’s wife in those few episodes of Atsu-hime starring more than rocking Aoi Miyazaki and lovable Eita?

    Can I just say she’s got the most beautiful profile when she pulls her hair up? Such striking features, and so SO interesting. So much more than many other generic-looking and average-talented actresses that are much more popular.

    So I wonder, why wasn’t this project much more popular?

  • Let Me In: The LtROi American Remake

    The first time I saw Let the Right One in [LtROi], I was left with a shivering tingle. Obviously, it became my fave film of 2008, and I have seen it seven times already… loving the slightly unconventional love story, and presenting a wonderful character such as Eli.

    This is why I don’t have to tell you how mad I was when I heard about the remake, right?

    Well, not long ago… in fact, just after I commented on The Auteurs about watching it again, someone asked me what I felt about the remake. After a few minutes thinking about it, I concluded that I wasn’t as mad as I was when the news broke. I still don’t think Let Me In could be as good as LtROi and/or bring anything new to the genre.

    Possibly, the best thing that could make me sway my decision is the casting of not only Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass, (500) Days of Summer), but also Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road). A moody and beautiful trailer would also help.

    However, there’s still the fact that they probably won’t tackle certain topics by changing Eli’s name to Abbey, which makes her a full girl unless I don’t know any guy names that could be shortened to Abbey… you know like sometimes Ashley is a guy or girl name? Add to that the fact that Richard Jenkins’ character is called “The Father” – weird.

    I’ll quote someone on IMDb who seems to explain it better…

    By having Abbey being a girl, they’ve already killed one of the things I love about the original book, its not a conventional love story, it’s more about the idea of what love is and what it means. There is something so strangely touching about how Oskar is willing to still accept Eli in his life even after everything he finds out about Eli, I just found that really touching in the original novel. – damann861

    I will probably watch the film… if it comes to local theaters, and if it doesn’t… well, I will probably take the time to download it. I mean, it all comes down to the trailer and the production stills. I want to see how it looks like before…

    What are your thoughts on American remakes of foreign films?

    Should they have waited a few more years to remake LtROi?
