Tabu’s Joan Crawford Traits

For the past week or so, I got into my Tabu movie journey and while watching Hawa, there was a particular shot that just struck me like a lightning bolt (pun!) and reminded me of Joan Crawford.

It’s a strong eyebrow thing (I have going on). Plus, Tabu’s got a nose with character (and the character to back it up). With her acting chops, she could totally pull off- let’s just skip The Women, coz I can’t picture a catty Indian version of that and just go straight into Crawford’s 40s- A Woman’s Face (or its En Kvinnas Ansikte version), Mildred Pierce (of course, I would love that), Humoresque, Possessed (1947), Daisy Kenyon, Flamingo Road, and The Damned Don’t Cry. Tabu is also at the perfect age.

The only thing about her that’s off is that… she doesn’t have the hunger for fame and power that I sense from Crawford.

Possessed and Mildred Pierce in contemporary Indian are topping my list.

Is It Yuuuuuuu?

I noticed a few people popping by searching for Yu Aoi, so I went looking for news on her tonight and I ran into this photo tagged with her name on Pinterest.

If it is, in fact, Yu Aoi. This is the first time I haven’t recognized her in a photo. Not like I’m like an expert or anything (though I do daydream someone calls me for a documentary on her life LOL).

First- the hair throws me off. So it may be one of those rare instances. The themes and styles seem to fit, and the whole shoot gives you strong Dandelion vibes for some reason. But one of the reasons, I don’t think it is Yu-chan is because I don’t see her freckles. She has three particular spots that always show up on her photos: the two marks on the right side of her right eye (the ones that looked like Shiro), and the mark on her left cheek near her nose.

Top suspect? One of them Korean look-alikes [see also and this]. At first, I thought it could be Hwang Seung Un [1][CM], but after a quick read, I decided it’s more likely Son Soo Hyun [1]. Seriously, some of their similarities [check the Busker Busker MV] are uncanny.

I wouldn’t mind one of those crazy comedy projects in which the two of them play sisters but speak completely different languages when speaking to each other. Specially directed by Satoshi Miki.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Re-Imagined by Shunji Iwai

I finally re-watched my BR copy of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai — Kajol’s eye makeup close-up in THAT scene on a big screen is stunning — my third time overall since I began watching Bollywood films and the best 9 hours of my life.

While watching KKHH last night, right after catching the trailer for Japan’s remake of Love Actually, it made me think what the world of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai would be like through the eyes of Shunji Iwai. Of course that would mean several cultural changes and cuts for length. I’m uncertain on whether I would place the main characters as college students or last years of high school… or even whether the school years should be taking place in the late 90s.

What I was more focused on is the characteristics of the actors and their characters. For Kajol’s Anjali, I knew I needed someone who could be one of the boys but at the same time should be physically interesting, and I immediately thought of Ayumi Ito. Her boyish aura is best shown by her character in SOLANIN — her squishing the beer can is burnt in my mind — while having a sort of rough exterior. I know a lot of people who don’t mind Ayumi Ito, but I also know of some of these people who… given the time… were taken by her. So I don’t have any doubt in her talent.

Next up — I know SRK’s role is pivotal because Rahul is the epitome of the Bollywood heartthrob dufus, but I’m taking it down a notch. I’m not very knowledgeable about Japan’s heartthrobs, but I don’t want someone who would be too pretty to make guys nervous nor a guy that’s more of a guys’ guy. I thought Shugo Oshinari would be a nice middle point.

Missy Elliott is back with the Dragon

Not exactly a strong dream collab of mine, but I’m sure GD was psyched to do this. I’m just glad to see Missy back after launching a couple of video-less singles [1] last year. She’s looking great and they both seem to be having a blast here.

The question now is… when do I get to download this track?

Dream Collaboration: Ang Lee + Nicole Kidman

I don’t know how this didn’t come to me before this photo.

After her collaboration with Bong Joon-ho, and that she so wanted to work with Wong Kar-wai — it only makes sense that she wouldn’t mind working with Ang Lee, after all~ he’s won two Oscars for director. He hasn’t actually made his actors win anything, even though Heath Ledger should’ve won for Brokeback Mountain as Best Actor instead of Supporting for Batman.

Kidman has a great selection of director’s on her filmography. One of the very few with really REALLY interesting choices [1].

The L Word in the Jdrama World – Part 2: The Story

In the first part of this re-imagination of The L Word in a Jdrama universe, we saw my dreamcast.

 I’m still a little unsure on one of my main details, though, and that’s whether I want Meisa Kuroki as Carmen — the hot Latina who sizzled people’s screens and made Shane go Loco (I’m sorry for the cheesy bad writing, but The L Word deserves this cheese)… or whether she should play Molly — the no-longer-straight law student who wouldn’t fall for Shane’s game, so I’m hoping to be able to make a reasonable mish-mash of the both of them.

The L Word in the Jdrama World – Part 1: The Cast

I guess it must be the Blogathon week, I just couldn’t shake that feeling that I had to talk about The L Word one way or the other… again. What better way to talk about than combining it with MY FAVORITE topic as of lately~ JDRAMA!

A while back [1], I found a post where a fan talked what Japanese stars they would pick if they ever wanted to remake The L Word in Japan. Of course, I went a step further. I thought about the HOW TOs in the adaptation of a Japanese The L Word… because, well- for starters, Japan in not the USA. Also, I can’t show Showtime content on Japanese television. Not if I want to use my dreamcast~~~

Meisa, what’s it gonna be?

Ahh… Meisa Kuroki — you know I have a soft spot for you? Somewhere deep in my brain there’s my subconscious telling me that you have potential. Then, the snarky part of me bursts out laughing when I see you in you music videos (and avoid your live performances)… and I swear I don’t mean to laugh. It’s just something that sort of happens.

Meisa Kuroki – One More Drama

Needle heels should be banned from choreographed music videos.

Having said that, damn. You know, say what you say KKK-ers — but when races mix correctly, it turns out hot. Meisa Kuroki is one hot mixed-race lady… but she can’t dance to save her life. I’ve never seen Meisa with normal shoes dancing, so I can’t say how she dances normally… but I remember her stint with Flamenco, and she got no swing.

But she’s got a good vibe…

I want to root for her.

But as with LOL, I keep bursting out laughing with this. Even though I kinda liked her Spanish-y guitar intro. I also liked how they did the one eye with different color thing.

Dream Collaboration: Sa Dingding + Laure Shang

I was just watching CCTV where Sa Dingding showed up. Her Harmony album was one of my faves last year, and revisiting Ha Li Li I thought she’d be perfect for a collaboration with Laure Shang with Love Warrior – which, at this moment, is one of my fave tracks of 2011.
