Archives For Spanish

This seems VERY open. It’s Asian, and it’s also Hollywood… so it seems like my kind of award. Funny thing is that some of those nominees seem very off and certainly kind of random.

For example the historical film The Founding of a Republic is… nominated for Best Comedy? OMG, is that ironic? Also… Inglourious Basterds didn’t make it to Best 2009 Film (even though you can vote for “other” and add it), and Bigelow didn’t make it to Best 2009 Director…

Anyway, some of the nominees in the international bits include usual suspects Avatar, The Hurt Locker, District 9, A Prophet, and Inglourious Basterds~~~ even Peru’s The Milk of Sorrow. xD

The Asian nominees include Mother, Thirst, Air Doll, Red Cliff, Ponyo, Forever Enthralled, Nobody to Watch Over me, Jackie Chan, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Eason Chan, Rain, Maggie Cheung, Gong Li, etc.

Some of the unusual categories include Best Asian Entertainer in Hollywood, Best Asian Movie of the Decade, 10 Best Asian Actors and Actresses…

I had recently bought a whole bunch of Haruki Murakami novels because I have fallen in love with his style. His narrative holds this air of melancholy… missing the past, but also a terrible sense of unhappiness. It’s utterly depressing, but this is why it’s so good.

Norwegian Wood (or Tokio Blues, in Spanish) is already being adapted into a film with a possible release for Dec’10, so it wasn’t a stretch to think about actual people playing the characters in the book.

It tells the non-chronological story of Watanabe Toru, who all of a sudden remembers Naoko, the girlfriend of his best friend in high school, who ended up killing himself. It deals with the aftermath of the suicide, Naoko’s life pre and post-suicide, and Watanabe’s life pre and post-suicide as well.

Just as the other Murakami novels, the story has that vibe of quiet sadness, great soundtrack and a sense of great cinematography. The characters are often quiet, and internalize everything. They are so real, that you can’t help getting into someone else’s shoes and call someone a jerk or a bitch.

I had problems starting  the novel, I read the first two chapters fine, but lost something during the middle part that made it almost tedious to continue with it. However, I was over it once I read about Midori, and how her developing relationship with Watanabe clashed with Watanabe’s feelings for Naoko… and then Reiko. As much as I wonder why these three end up sucked into the gravitational forces of Watanabe, and how I think that is somewhat sexist… I can’t help but want the best for him. And, in my opinion, that was with Hatsumi…

I can’t wait to see this on screen!

3.5/5

It used to be really difficult to watch shorts before the Academy Awards gave its shorts prize, but now it seems many filmmakers have decided to show their work online… and well, people have taken into uploading more shorts xD Obviously, except for the BBC and Wallace and Gromit in ‘A Matter of Loaf and Death’

Fight illegal downloads, and be cool!

via Wildgrounds.

Yes, yet another downloads, distribution and torrents post. Why? Because it is important to discuss this issue as many many cases of people who download are brought to court.

It is important to point out the different types of uploaders/downloaders. First, the uploaders — there are those who upload to share and spread their interest so they find someone they can share a common interest with. Someone to talk to about this piece. However, they are often confused with the people who upload to get hits and possibly ad revenue… meaning, making a profit.

This is why so many fansubbing groups are against streaming, many streamers (unless they are authorized) upload videos that don’t belong to them (they don’t even sub stuff themselves!), since streaming is easier than download they get more hits and become more popular from other people’s work.

Oscar 2010 Nominations

February 2, 2010 — 5 Comments

Wow color me surprise. This is a lot of history in the making…

First, it’s a battle against Avatar vs. The Hurt Locker with each having 9 nominations. Followed by Inglourious Basterds with 8, Precious and Up in the Air with 6, Up with 5, and District 9, Nine, and Star Trek with 4.

Also, Peru just made Oscar History with its first ever nomination for Foreign Film.

I just got a few surprises like I asked, as well as really good guesses… missing some films, but also nice surprises like District 9 getting 4 nods. LOL

Oscar 2010 Predictions

February 1, 2010 — 4 Comments

Tomorrow it’s nomination days!

My country is buzzing with anticipation of a possible Best Foreign Film nod for The Milk of Sorrow.

Anyway, I did Oscar predictions last year and I got about 85% of nominations right considering all of the categories, and nearly a perfect score in major categories of acting, directing and film. However, I don’t think I will be getting a score as good as last time.

There’s no gain without Wayne, or there’s no pain without Wayne. I know it’s something like that. It’s been years since I first heard Wayne Isham saying that on one of those episodes of MTV’s Making the Video, back when making a video was very important for MTV.

Wayne Isham was another name that really popped up when I spent all day watching MTV. If I could describe Isham’s music video style with one word, it would be “woosh!” even though that’s not a word. His videos captured a very energetic vibe with fast cuts and, what I call fade-in wooshes — it’s when Isham would be focusing his camera on the singer/group and there would be a fade-in from one shot to the next one that made it seem like pushing in or away from the subject in a very funky way.

Of course, the best way to understand that woosh concept is to see it in action. For instance, those fast cuts are very prominents on Metallica’s video of I Disappear (from the Mission Impossible II OST) xD Continue Reading…

What the title says~

From the 65 eligible foreign films, the top9 have been chosen~ I’m being positive here, instead of saying films have been cut. xD Anyway, as a surprise (to many?) Claudia Llosa’s The Milk of Sorrow (aka. La Teta Asustada) made the Top9, alongside:

  • Argentina’s El Secreto de sus Ojos
  • Australia’s Samson & Delilah
  • Bulgaria’s The World is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner
  • France’s Un Prophete
  • Germany’s The White Ribbon
  • Israel’s Ajami
  • Kazakhstan’s Kelin
  • The Netherlands’ Winter in Wartime.

At the moment, The White Ribbon and Un Prophete are lock-ins… it seems, so that leaves 3 more spots to fill. Which films will they be? I’ve seen The Milk of Sorrow and commented on them a year ago when the film won the top prize at the Berlinale. For a short review, and an article about the original title of the film plus other Peruvian films check out YAM003.
