Archives For pricey hobbies

I stumbled across a vinyl version of Meenaxi – A Tale of Three Cities, and I’m almost disappointed it’s just a generic pressing of one of A.R. Rahman’s most underrated soundtracks and, of course, one of Tabu’s most underrated gems.

For a while now, I’ve been lamenting the death of physical media in India. The movie collection is really really suffering from it.

The world is also suffering from lack of high definition promo materials and HD transfers for M.F. Hussain’s Meenaxi. The world deserves multiple color vinyl editions to play on the Yeh Rishta [MV]/Rang Hai [MV] color palette themes of the movie. Blue, yellow, orange, purple, besides the red one.

I’ve started buying some vinyl editions of music I’ve been listening to and things I love. I’ve got a few Regina Spektor albums, definitely some Dirty Projectors, Kishi Bashi, and Mamamoo’s Solar Yeba Sunbaenim’s Solar Emotions vinyl (which was my first). I was bummed BUMMED when I signed up to VMP (Vinyl Me, Please) because I had been dying to get Fiona Apple albums on vinyl (I settled for CD) and found out they don’t do shipping down here.

I found a couple Kpop related releases on vinyl, including from Wheein-ah, and it’s just really frustrating RBW hasn’t done a vinyl print of the perfect album for vinyl- Mamamoo’s Melting.

My mockup skills are awful now, so now this will have to do. Why aren’t we getting Melting on vinyl? Black cover and spicy swirly orange vinyl would be cool as design, though.

On December, I wrote about a couple of my concert music DVDs rotting away.

And the YT algo just popped this on the feed, talking about a number of Warner Bros titles that are apparently being affected.

Somebody on forums (!!! They still exist!) posted a list of probable affected titles, and to my dismay, the Greta Garbo and (both) Joan Crawford collections are affected. I just popped Mata Hari and Possessed on the player and seem to be playing fine.

Another one of the fears with (new) media and products that developed in types of plastic is that they’re decaying faster than people expected. I’ve had older (retired) players that were kept on storage that have a general sticky texture after a while. However, this doesn’t seem to happen to players that are in general exposure, not directly with sunlight, but in a generally airy room that’s in use, unlike a display room. I also happen to live in the mildest of climates, though high in humidity, temperatures never go above 30C (above 90F) or lower than 14C (lower than 55F). So maybe these conditions are affecting the storage of physical media.

I did the vast majority of my library collection before 2007, though. I did buy a number of things in between the mid-2000s to late-2000s, so if disc rot is affecting a general batch produced in between 2007-2009, it is a concern. I’m generally more worried with collections I keep in drawers instead of a regular shelf display.

Buying physical media has been a chore lately, you gotta keep an eye out so you make sure you don’t miss your delivery because, for some reason, people cannot just leave your package any longer.

Plus, distributors are doing physical media less and less. The whole of the Indian Cinema industry has decided to phase out physical media in favor of going all in on OTT and VOD. Even enormous hits like RRR are left with no physical release, even in the West. Even Disney is letting Sony handle its physical media, which seems like the end of an era. Then there’s the whole thing about editing and disappearing media from libraries.

So these are some of the most recent -and not so recent- films that have been added to the physical library. I wish I had more disposable income because there are a bunch of titles (and upgrades) that had been added to the wishlist.

These on top of some Bluray upgrades like Sion Sono’s Love Exposure, Kalatozov’s The Cranes Are Flying, brand new Criterion’s for Los Otros and Laberinto del Fauno. Some random BR UK release for Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

Also, this post makes it so that this year is the most I’ve blogged since 2020. I’m coming for you 2019. Four posts in Feb’24 is the most continuous blogging since Aug’18.

I thought I might have bought my last Shiina bluray last time, but I guess not? It does look like I might add Shiina Ringo & The Others Dwell: The Air Pocket Zone (椎名林檎と彼奴等の居る真空地帯) [HMV JP] to my collection because I cannot resist.

Mamamoo has officially become the group with most albums in my music collection— officially 8 albums; but honestly it’s 9 albums (with a double Purple edition), plus a SolGam tape, a SolGam LP, two kihno kits, a DVD and a BR of Moosical. LOL

Once upon a time, there were five albums by P!nk, but there were also six albums by the BackStreet Boys, six Hanson albums, six Westlife albums, four turned to five Marit Larsen albums, five Salyu-related albums, five albums eventually turned to seven by BiBi [it became viral on Weibo xD], seven albums by Shiina Ringo, seven albums by Bjork— altogether, I have 6 Brown Eyed Girls-related albums but that’s three albums, a fancy collectible repackage and two GaIn minis. Phew.

Look who’s playing her Solar Emotions LP

I’m a stan. I have decided to stan forever. LOL Well, at least a few years. A few years in this day and age is an awfully long time, which is practically forever. I’ve seen relationships that have lasted less than my two and a half years as a moomoo. xD

I’ve been a fan of Yu Aoi for a decade now [1][2]. I’m expecting my moomoo status to be just as long.

If they ever do an event here. I’m done for. LOL I’ve been wanting to feed them my whole moomoo life, as the Grandma Radish that I seem to be turning into.

I was looking for a decent quality image of Alexander Walker’s Joan Crawford: The Ultimate Star book cover, but I couldn’t find any :/ so I decided to scan my own. Take it as a service to the online community. I was going to watermark it, but decided not to. A link back or a shout out would be nice, tho :)

I. Got. So. Excited…

When I saw that there was a bluray release of The Murder Case of Hana & Alice with Spanish subtitles by Media3 Estudio, and it comes with a freaking disc for Hana & Alice too. I suffered so much when I realized, just a minute later, that the bluray release is Region B for Europe xD

And it looks so pretty too TnT

I had been looking around for an actual region-free bluray player, because I have a bunch of R1-DVD and R4-DVD discs that I’m too lazy to re-watch on my region-free DVD player, which used to be the norm players sold down here. I really don’t look forward to having to import electronics, because I can only imagine the headache it’ll be considering the headaches I get whenever I order my preferred shampoo. LOL

Thank You, Solar-ssi~

I just wanted to drop a note thanking Solar for releasing Solar Gamsung on tape (yes, I was one of the lucky ones to get it on first order), because that pushed me to clean up the cassette deck I had at home (yes, I’m the old person who still has a cassette player on hand).

Honestly, I thought my deck was busted, I remember testing it a while back and it stopped working. Today, I cleaned it up with alcohol; and though the automatic open/close is faulty as heck and the rewind/fwd doesn’t always work, it plays stuff. And today I listened to my dad’s voice in years. So thank you, Solar-ssi, for making me cry tonight.

My dad used to have a Karaoke bar in the 90s, and ever the music fan and Karaoke-owner, he liked to sing and record himself singing. LOL So now I have 42min. of him singing an array of 14 songs. He was, obviously, a very VERY big Miguel Bose fan. Though, honestly, I had never heard my dad singing (the Spanish version of) I Will Follow You xD Now I’ve finally transferred his tapes on mp3 to keep :) added him to my iTunes library, album cover and all~

Los Doltons’ version of El Ultimo Beso will always be a good memory of him.
