The Show-Off Film Collection List~

Oh, Happy Chinese New Year! Let’s start my (supposedly) bad-luck Goat Year with the now-mandatory Letterboxd list of my film collection~

I have a really weird history with films– born in the late 80s, you’d think I would’ve grown watching loads of 90s kids stuff, but I actually grew up with a lot of Silly Symphonies (which were released in the 30s) and loads of Disney 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s stuff, plus a lot of more grown up 80s movies. Poltergeist, The Thing, The Fly and The Stuff were particularly scary stuff (and I’m pretty sure I was scared of yogurt or white stuff at some point).

I don’t ever remember buying any original VHS tape, except for the rare birthday gift of a Disney’s Sing-Along Songs chapter or that X-Men tape I have. My first DVDs buys were Coyote Ugly, She’s All That and Loser — you can’t blame me. I was a 15-year-old girl. The collection grew bigger, and possibly exploded during my years abroad. I’m nearing my 500th movie.

In Progress: 2014 Film Count

This is the first time in my movie-counting life that I’ve seen over 50 movies by the middle of the year. As a general number, I picked 48 a year, to make sure I -at least- watched one film a week for my end of the year list.

There’s a LOT of bad and meh movies so far, but there’s also a decent Top10. Not unbelievable, but decent. It’s a working one that would do for a Dec.31 or Jan.01 publishing date. LOL

The Harmony Can of Worms

I’m sorry, JK. Not gonna play beyond this, but you just stirred a can of worms full of fandom feelings that a lot of people didn’t want to deal with. I hope you didn’t just do it for PR.

For years (and years) I had moved on from fandom. I was fine, we were fine. We (probably) weren’t spending money or time on it. Now you come in to nudge that nasty fandom shipping war of name-calling and eye-rolling. What for? So you can make a quick buck on your next Harry Potter or non-HP endeavor?

Going Down the Van Movie-going Memories~

I was finally doing some room cleaning, and ran into this plastic bag that had a whole bunch of the tickets of movies I caught while living/staying in Van. The results? Of course, I spent over two hours trying to make out some of the fade tickets, arranged them and put them in order of attendance.

The first movie that I caught there was Hulk at what used to be Tinseltown Cinemark. The first two columns cover my first year of studies. My maximum number of movies a month was 9 flicks in January 2004 (Cold Mountain, Big Fish, Peter Pan, 21 Grams, Along Came Polly, Monster, Butterfly Effect, The Cooler and Ginger Snaps 2), April 2004 (Hellboy, The Delicate Art of Parking, Kill Bill, Connie and Carla, Home on the Range, The Punisher, Dogville (twice) and Man on Fire), followed by July 2006 (Devil Wears Prada, The Omen,The Lake House, The King, PotC 2, Lady in the Water, Strangers with Candy, and an unidentified movie that’s already faded) with 8 flicks.

The Harmony Evil Kiss

I know this is wrong.

SOOOOOO wrong, but all this Harry Potter talk has stirred my Shipper brain which had been laying dormant since… the better part of the Order of the Phoenix movie and the release of the last book.

I suffered so much with the last book, it felt like being mocked. Especially in the Evil Kiss part, it felt like tainting all those hours reading those long and thought out essays. It was like all those who supported Harry/Hermione were… well, evil. LOL We were like the Horcrux, tainting a pure friendship with those dark bits in the Evil Kiss.

I’ve made peace with that, in my own way.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1

It’s begun. The beginning of the end. After the 7th book came out, and left me unsatisfied — a feeling carried over the 6th book and the 5th film — I swore to never see Harry Potter at the cinema ever again. A promise easy to keep with the 6th film, but then… it was hard to keep it when the first promotional materials for HP7 were released.

Well played, Warner. Well played.

Deathly Hallows is perhaps Yates’ best attempt at a Harry Potter adaption, but considering the other two – it isn’t saying that much. In the greater scale of things, it might follow on Azkaban’s footsteps as an interesting film filled with anguish and desperation… of I guess, the teenage sort. If the book didn’t work for you, the film seems to improve on action and characters. It’s also of great comfort to say that The WB’s decision of splitting the film in two parts was hardly a bad commercial or creative choice… at least for the fans of the books, who will savor each an every detail.

But then again, considering how many chapters were crammed into this first part, one has to wonder what’s left for part two if not only the “last battle” which, in the book, happened off-page… and that epilogue that’s ripped out of the most poorly written fanfiction.

For the non-readers or those who haven’t seen HP6… well, you’re screwed. It really doesn’t work without the background, and you’re better without watching it, if you’re going to start complaining. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows feels like made for the fans of the series only.

More Emma Watson

With the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows… er, Part 1, there’s been a few interviews… events, magazine shoots, covers etc. Lainey is even interviewing the not-so-kids, and then… there’s of course the rumors.

Apparently there’s fake nude pics running around the Brown University campus… after Emma spoke how her Brown experience had been pretty great. And I just love that Sarah, who now writes pretty often for Lainey, has come up with this article. It’s like Emma is her little sister.

Who would take the time to photoshop Emma’s head to a naked picture? What are they 12? I find it completely childish to be doing such a thing at that age… in university! And while I certainly don’t think it’s the police’s jurisdiction to handle an investigation, it should be Brown’s responsibility to find out who did it and sanction them.

It’s not even the action of photoshopping these photos. I’m sure there’s people around the world that do that and post this stuff online, but the fact that your peers do it. These are people that study with her.

I’m not exactly jumping up and down for Emma Watson film projects, but I am glad she’s grown up to be a well-rounded adult that doesn’t feel the need to rebel against “the man”. Rebel for the sake of rebelling.

New Harry Potter Character Teaser Posters

Not like I’m any taller, but if Radcliffe were taller, he’d be hotter.
His high-contrast Harry Potter stubble is totally quiveration. LOL

The posters don’t seem like regular character posters, though. More like teaser character posters, even if it seems late to be releasing teasers now~~~ I can’t remember if the WB has ever released teaser character posters.

Is this being referred as HP 7 Part 1, instead of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1? Maybe it was a typographical decision more than a branding one?
