Archives For Television

One of the many reasons I love BiBi is because she introduced me to Mavis Fan when she sang a bit of You Don’t Trust Me at All [MV] in one of those talk shows where the hosts (all women) asked her to sing snippets of different songs. I remember she also did a bit of Leehom’s Julia, but I was struck by her bit on Mavis and ended up discovering her.

Now she’s introducing me to Shino (林曉培)- of course, not a guarantee that I’ll fall in love with her music as I did with Mavis’ but you gotta start somewhere. Bibi’s performance of Shino’s Annoyed (煩) was pretty awesome. The song was also composed by Sandee Chan. Suddenly, she’s overpopulated my music library.

A little bit more than ten years ago, Anita Mui passed away leaving a legacy of music and movies that will be remembered. Even my dad knew Anita Mui (besides from Jackie Chan movies), he told me he knew her from her singing the Song of Sunset (夕陽之歌) [1][2], which he loved both in this version and its Japanese original.

Ten years after her passing, her (very famous) friends got together to put something really special… a super performance to remember her by. Titled Anita Mui. 10. Longing. Music. Concert (梅艷芳。10。思念。音樂。會), the event garnered an array of Hong Kong (and overall Chinese) best — of the best for a night of music and memories.

Jacky Cheng, A-Mei, HOCC was there, Miriam Yeung, Sammi Cheng. Eric Tsang being melancholic, Jackie Chan throwing a joke… Eason Chan with his hair~ Maggie Cheung was freaking there, Aaron Kwok swung his hips, and Carina Lau introduced her hubby Tony Leung, and Tony SANG! People cheered. At a point in the concert, I told my mom “the only one missing here is Andy Lau.” Lo and behold, who turns up for one of the last numbers~

The only one I missed was Faye Wong. Just coz.

Anyway, my dad would’ve been happy with this show. I hope he and Anita are sharing a drink together up above.

BiBi, Papa would’ve been proud of that performance. It brought so many feelings.

BiBi’s participating in the Chinese version of the Korean contest I Am a Singer, now in its second season. Last time, Laure Shang was in it and was eliminated fairly early on.

Let’s hope BiBi makes it through.

I ran into this clip of Chulpan Khamatova, which I thought was a Behind the Scene voice-over session for some animation, but turns out to be a music video with Khamatova (alongside Andrei Makarevich, Vyacheslav Butusov and Sergei Makovetsky) singing. Multi-talented, I tell you [1].

The song is called My Letin (Мы летим) — which translates to We Fly — and is a song included in the series Flying Animals (Летающие звери, Letayushtie Zveri), an animated charity series that aims to aid children with their treatments with the show’s profits. They don’t ask for money, they generate it by selling their products.

You can check them out on Facebook, VK, LiveJournal, SoundcloudTwitter, Instagram, their official site at FlyAni.ru, and -of course- YouTube.

I actually am not sure whether Pepel (Пепел) is a series or a TV movie. It doesn’t seem to be a theatrical film, though. It’s supposed to air on October 27th (so about now) in Ukraine and on the 28th in Russia (through Channel 1). If my reading is okay, this seems to indicate that Pepel is a 12-episode series, and its got the whole historical war mystery setting.

The show stars Yevgeni Mironov, who also worked with Khamatova in Dostoevsky, as the title character, alongside Vladimir Mashkov, Elena Lyadova, and Sergei Garmash. I’m not sure who Khamatova is supposed to be playing.

I wonder if it will eventually get subtitled.

It seems like a cruel joke that now the memory of my dad is forever linked to Dexter. It isn’t enough that the both of us watched the show, and that I was waiting for the final season to be completely subtitled so he could watch it.

Now, the final episode in which Dexter bids Harrison goodbye and Deb is able to let go is the moment my dad bids me goodbye and finally lets go. It’s almost scary that the Dexter FB page posted this message the day my dad passed away:

dexter-daddy-loves-u

The post seems to be gone now, but when that showed up, I couldn’t help but express my incredulity. “I want you to remember that every single day until I see you again. Daddy loves you.” I will, dad. There won’t be a single day in which I don’t think of you and how much I miss you.

Here on Facebook and Twitter.

I’m a little bit sad I have no one else to share this with. I think my dad would’ve loved seeing this clip of BiBi and Chris Lee together after all these years. It’s all gonna be so weird now, I have no one to share all my music with.

More info here.

Ganesh will always bring me memories of Asami Mizukawa [1].

Here’s a clip of the show featuring Black Ganesha. xD

Ice-skating with the Stars

September 7, 2013 — 3 Comments

I subscribed to the KhamatovaInfo YouTube channel not long ago and they uploaded this clip of what seems to be the latest season of Lednikoviy Period (Ледниковый период) — or Ice Age, if you must. An “ice-skating with the stars” kind of TV contest. In the clip linked above, there’s a tiny appearance by Khamatova as guest (or maybe guest judge??), so I went quick-digging… and found this~

Scottish ice-skating turned ice-skating Riverdance with a totally focused Khamatova.

Apparently Chulpan was part of the first series of the show that aired back in 2007, in which she was paired with ice-skater (ice-dancer???) Roman Kostomarov, and pushed ahead to become the winner of the season. This is the moment that I grin knowing Chulpan is multi-talented — and actually remember that she used to ice-skate before an injury.

Plus, it’s really an advantage that the guy leads.

Here are the list of her performances I could find:

  1. Hip Hop (I suppose? or Urban?) – Performance 1 – Give it to Me by Timbaland ft. Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake
  2. Performance 2 is listed above. (Perfect Score)
  3. 50s Rock n Roll? – Performance 3 – I Put a Spell on You by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins
  4. Classic ? – Performance 4 – (Perfect Score)
  5. Samba? (Maybe Latin?) – Performance 5 – Mas que Nada by Sergio Mendes
  6. French? – Performance 6 [alt. link with audio] – Padam Padam by Edith Piaf
  7. Full-on Russian – Performance 7Love and Poverty (Любовь и бедность) from Hello, I’m your Aunt! (Здравствуйте, я ваша тётя!) [1]
  8. Contemporary ? – Performance 8 – it’s supposed to be a piece from O Clone, the Brazilian soap unless there’s something else that’s called Clone. However, I haven’t been able to identify the name of the track.
  9. Classic (or Broadway??) – Performance 9 – Jesus Christ Superstar
  10. X – missing clip??
  11. Classic Russian – Performance 11 – The Woman Who Sings (Женщина, которая поёт) by Alla Pugacheva
  12. Russian Alt Rock (or Rock n Roll Twist??) – Performance 12 – What Do You (Что ты имела) by Neschastny Sluchai (Несчастный случай)
  13. Full-on Russian – Final Performance – Music Unknown

If I spoke fluent Russian, I would’ve taken a plane to watch her doing theater. xD

This year’s season of The Voice of China is a bit on the meh side compared to last year’s. Some good talents, but not as awing as some of last year’s. This battle for Wang Feng’s team, though, from Simon Chung (鐘偉強) of Hong Kong singing it out with Beijing-based Bi Xia (毕夏) with the classic Hey Jude was pretty emotional.

The whole father/daughter interaction going on, because Simon took the time to guide Bi Xia through the song and Bi Xia’s knowing what he’d done for her makes the whole elimination process all the more painful.

Other battle highlights~

Yi Guang Nian (毅光年) Vs. Sheng Yin Yue Tuan (声音乐团) – I Surrender (没离开过)

From Amei’s team:
