  • Take the Night (or Day) Off for this Laura Marling Medley

Not so much ‘big vocal chops’ as ‘lyricist to watch out for,’ but Laura Marling’s voice is lovely nonetheless. This is a lovely medley she did for WNYC with -probably- the strongest segment in her album Once I Was an Eagle; Take the Night Off, I Was an Eagle, You Know and Breathe.

She’s a 24-year-old from the UK… and this is hardly ‘new talent’ as she’s on her 4th album already. She’s 4 or 5 years younger than Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and 2 years younger than Rihanna.

Whatever happened to the US music industry?

  • Huzzah Rani for Mardaani

Though I did knocked the trailer out because I thought Rani might have been a little “too chunky” to pull off the chasing and fighting [1], her frame actually makes much more sense. I’ve never met in real life a come-hither-you sexy of a female (or male) cop, as many of them just look like the police that are played by extras, instead of them sexy male or female leads on Hollywood movies.

Plus, Rani does look like a total badass, so what’s not to like?

And seeing that she’s promoting self-defense classes and all, why not just lump black-belt Rina Takeda in here. ‘Coz, duh! Rina Takeda would not only take Rani (or Madhuri or Priyanka) out, she would also take down SRK, probably Salman and maybe Akshay Kumar… though I may have read he knows martial arts or something? Maybe he was just a fan of Hong Kong martial arts movies…

  • Rina Takeda Kicking Ass in the Morning, Taking Names in the Evening

High-Kick Girl! was a really really poorly-edited movie with a very weak script, but Rina Takeda makes a lasting impression because, well… in their words: “No wires. No stuntmen. Literally really kicking. Seriously… I get kicked.” is their selling point.

If Scarlet Johansson gets to be an action star. Why shouldn’t Rina Takeda get to do it? Please, Luc Besson and Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan. Take notice!

    SO.MUCH.POTENTIAL.RIGHT.THERE.

Karate Girl was already an improvement. Imagine the possibilities with a strong director, first class action choreography and a proper project surrounding the girl.

  • From the Vault: Y2K + the Internet with J. Lo

Remember when Jennifer Lopez debuted with If You Had my Love? I listen to On the 6 from time to time, especially because her duet with Marc Anthony No Me Ames [MV] is one of my favorites to lipsync xD

Remember when 1999 had every single music video in metallic colors and had a Y2K theme or similar? Remember when J.Lo was with Puffy, pre-Ben, pre-marriage to Marc, and could dance… and didn’t make ridiculous performances with Pitbull for the World Cup?

People may think that this song is so un-Latina of her, but the album actually has a good mixture of Latino in there~

  • Fireworks Filmed with a Drone by Jos Stiglingh

There’s a very cool video of the fireworks show in West Palm Beach FL. that was shot using a drone. Some of the shots would’ve looked really awesome in 3D, and the clip would’ve been more awesome if YouTube had let the uploader use the original audio track, which seems to have been set to Andrea Bocelli’s Con Te Partiro [clip].

So I went to one of them websites that mishes and mashes clips together. Make sure you watch the fireworks in HD ;)

  • I’ve Been Wanting It That Way for 15 Years

This YouTube thing telling me I should maybe “watch” some videos that I had already watched had me clicking on the BackStreet Boys’ I Want It That Way,because… WHY NOT? — turning me into a 15-year-old all over again.

Actually, I was a lot younger. I was probably closer to 13, but you can’t really tell considering distribution wasn’t instant back then. My English skills weren’t consistent back then, and I remember we’d all share the lyrics to the song from an ex-classmate that was visiting when she’d left for the US. Printed out emails to share lyrics. xD

Up until these days, whenever I listen to songs of the 90s, it’s likely I have to stop what I’m doing and sing at the top of my lungs… even though I can’t reach the notes any longer. LOL I also can’t sing along while doing choreography either. xD I also don’t bother to learn lyrics of songs either. It’s not only because 80% of the music I listen to now it’s in a language I can’t converse in, there’s also the amount of music that needs to be heard.

It’s not because I’m old or anything xD

    No~~~ ;P

  • Ishq Ki Ijaazat – Let Love Be my Right by Satyanshu & Devanshu Singh

As of lately, India has had a er… quite “dynamic” back and forth in terms of LGBT standings. Though not long ago, Hijras won the right to be legally recognized as a third gender in the country, there’s still this bit of problem when the Supreme Court went back to criminalizing homosexual relationships. But people have been fighting for their right to love~

Writer and filmmaker brothers Satyanshu and Devanshu Singh (who wrote the beautiful poems in Udaan) put together a beautiful (film) poem titled Ishq Ki Ijaazat – Let Love Be my Right, which features a voice-over by actress Huma Qureshi. Brownie points for Huma!

For this and Dedh Ishqiya ;)

  • Hello World BiBi vs. Belle FIGHT!

BiBi’s got a brand new song titled Hello World, the theme for the new Mainland Chinese movie The Breakup Guru (分手大师), which opens…  on June 27th. The vibe of the song is very Train’s Hey Soul Sister-y and Jason Mraz-y chill whimsical folksy.

Fun fact: Jason Mraz’s Wordplay [MV] was my jam back in my Vancouverite days. Never liked him as much since then.

  • Tizzy Bac’s Hui Ting Goes Solo and Sets on Fire

… and in the process gets to remind me of Dido, for some reason.

Tizzy Bac vocalist Chen Hui Ting is set to release her solo album 21gr. (21克), which includes this song titled Set on Fire. The video is directed by Lin Hui Bin (林揮斌)… but I’m unsure if he did the light painting or just put together the video.

I always have such respect for people that light-paint in Chinese characters or Arabic. Haven’t run into people using Devanagari or Sanskrit or any other non-Roman script, though, that’d be really interesting.

  • You came, then you left, only leaving behind the starry sky~

    Paraphrasing this different…

    小时候,爸爸说《睡不着的时候就看看天空找到最亮的那颗星星,魔法师就会送你一个美梦》。睡梦中,我知道魔法师带着爸爸回来了。

When I was little, dad used to say, “when you can’t sleep, just look to the sky. Find the brightest star, and the magician will grant you a beautiful dream.” In the dream, I know the magician will bring my father back.

Father’s day is coming up soon, and all the promotion has made it a difficult start of the month. This is the latest song to make me cry.
