First, let me spazz as the LA Critics surprise by choosing Korean Actress — awesomest ahjumma for the award season — Kim Hye-ja for Best Actress with her work on Bong Joon-ho’s Madeo (Mother). The pick kind of baffles me since I consider Madeo a 2009 Film, and Kim Hye-ja was even nominated in my first Experiments Awards.

Then, the LA Critics also surprise with a tie for Director choosing Olivier Assayas for Carlos, as well as David Fincher for The Social Network. While adding a personal sting by picking Olivia Williams for Best Supporting Actress runner-up — RUNNER-UP!!!! — for her work on The Ghost Writer… beaten by Jacki Weaver in Animal Kingdom. LOL

The Ghost Writer blew pretty much everything on this one, which makes me even sadder that there isn’t a Supporting Actress (or Actor) category, so Olivia Williams could win.
I’m also happy that Sylvain Chomet’s The Illusionist won animated feature~ :)

Finally watched Polanski’s The Ghost Writer. In short, very well done. Loads of thrills, melodrama, some humor… loads of politics. Having said that, Olivia Williams needs more attention. She was pretty great last season with An Education — and was completely snubbed –, and she’s always been interesting on screen.
Every time I bring up her name, people say “who?”
And you must know her for sure! I mean, she was on Dollhouse~~~ and she had a cameo on X-Men The Last Stand, She was Mrs. Darling on Peter Pan. She was also on The Body with Antonio Banderas, she started out as Bruce Willis’ wife on The Sixth Sense, and was on Wes Anderson’s Rushmore. WTF, she’s been a working actress for almost 20 years~
On The Ghost Writer? She pretty much blew me away. The question is, should she be going for Best Actress, or just go for Best Supporting? Supporting acting always gives good results.

That is a photo of Carey Mulligan looking a bit different, but a pretty cool photograph. Who’s Carey Mulligan, you say? Well, I first spotted her as Elsie on My Boy Jack (starring Daniel Radcliffe), but truth be told~ I couldn’t pay much attention to it until her scenes came up.
Where else have you seen her? She was also Kitty on Pride & Prejudice (the one with Keira), and Doctor Who as Sally Sparrow. And she seems to be having a pretty busy 2009~~~ with The Greatest (with Susan Sarandon), Public Enemies (with Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard~~~ Ooh la!), Brothers (with Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Natalie Portman~~~ another Ooh la!), and An Education (by writer Nick Hornby) – in fact, I was checking out The Awards Circuit, and turns out they have her listed for this film as a Best Actress Nomination until now!
Now that’s pretty impressive.
Next-next up for her? Never Let Me Go (by Kazuo Ishiguro… with Keira, and Sally Hawkins) and The Electric Slide (with Ewan McGregor).
