  • Lee Hyori on Making Money Doing Music on Happy Together

    Hyori has been delivering on variety shows and interviews all week- people are loving Hyori’s Bed & Breakfast; I’ve been emo because of that moment when Hyori was teaching IU about life as a 20-something. She’s just full of ‘life as a celebrity’ wisdom. She talks about her marriage, controlling her temper, her insecurities releasing music, not having endorsements or doing commercials for a living, and trying to profit from just music.

    She’s just realizing that you can’t make a living doing just music in Korea. I’m actually quite shocked that she says that Psy only made $38k with Gangnam Style. That’s a HUGE shock. I also hope that’s only what streaming and downloads did in South Korea, because I’d be super shocked if that includes the YouTube, iTunes and Spotify fees.

    Happy 3rd Anniversary, Mamamoo!

    I always give a special shout out to all the people involved in MamamooTrans, who do an incredible job at keeping all non-Korean-speaking iMoomoos up to date. Without them, getting to know Mamamoo would be a thousand times more difficult and not such an amazing ride as it had been so far. VLives, clips, interviews, and most of all, fan meetings. Thank you guys for spoiling us as much as Mamamoo does.

    As Mamamoo prepares for their comeback this week [Praise the L0rd! But let them succeed!], I’ve been getting my fix with Moonbyul on IDOT. I’ve been loving the girls in IDOT, but specially Somi and Seulgi and D.ANA. And now their Immortal Song performance, their most recent VLive [Did you guys stay up or woke up earlier for it?]. I am ready for the 22nd.

    I already pre-ordered Purple — the double album version, I don’t even know why — so I am ready for it to be released.

  • Dave Tynan’s Heartbreak featuring Emmet Kirwan

    Sometimes I forget to share some of the short films I find online that I love. I was working on some of the MUBI film submissions and this came, which has just won the Irish Film & Television Academy Award for Best Short Film, which shows Emmet Kirwan doing some slam poetry to tell the story of a teenager who gets pregnant and raises her child, struggling to be an unwed Irish mother from a poor household in modern day Ireland.

    I came to know about slam poetry via Shane Koyczan and his sequence at the 2010 Winter Olympics [1]. xD

    After the initial hiccup with the release of the Decalcomanie MV, we’ve put that behind us (but shouldn’t really, because it’s important to talk about these things). RBW has promised to release a brand new video once Decalcomanie (all CJ+Mamamoo uploads combined) reaches 3M views. At the moment, the CJ one has 1.127M while the Mamamoo one has 211k, so do the math.

    Oh, and there’s also that one-shot M Countdown fancam.

    Moonbyul looks so happy with all those layers of clothing and actual pair of pants. lol

    I can’t wait for all the other performances, once the jitters of the first performance has gone.

    I am obviously not a true Mamamoo fan, because I wasn’t aware of this performance until today. I’ve reached a point in my fandom life where a Mamamoo-related site is one of my top visited websites. I visit it three or four times a day, at least. LOL I’m shameful.

  • Just Discovering the Amazingness of Ivana Wong~

    So I was browsing album covers on Xiami when I ran into the one for Ivana Wong’s latest single, Goi Sei Dik Faai Lok (該死的快樂, translated to Damn Happy)… which turns out has a brand new video. And I was like- where have you been all my life when I started going down her discography~

    Jyu Jat (如一, As One) is great. Siu Sau Seot (小手術, Minor Surgery) is amazing with the Lyrics Video. It’s also helping me practice my Cantonese xD My jyutping game is totally poor. I also hate that sometimes I’m fixing my music library and it’s not Cantonese but Mandarin, so I gotta fix my romanization. But I’m totally digging her music. More her less popular songs that are not straight up sappy ballads. Her piano skills seem to be on point.

    Not new talent, but total new discovery.

    I forgot to share this! Gobelins is always great for student animation, it seems the shorts they’re posting on YouTube will be feature at the current Annecy Film Fest~ including this fantastic short by Fabien Corre, Sixtine Dano, Thibault Leclercq, Katie Sung Lee, Valentin Lucas, and Andrei Sitari.

    It’s gorgeously animated when a bar fights strikes involving a bunch of artists in 1910, Montmartre.
