Archives For show recs

On year 2002, a little odd sci-fi show began showing on Fox… and as all worthy Fox shows, it got canceled. Sadly, I never saw this show when it was on the air because it was not showing in Peru in 2002, and when I got to Canada, it was already out of the air. I remember that when I returned to Lima, I saw a couple of commercials on tv, but never made anything out of it.

fireflyIt was not until my friend Nathan dragged me to the movies to watch Serenity… well, he didn’t drag me because I was more than willing to watch films, LOL’ – so when I watched the film, I was WOWed with it. And so… my friend lend me his pirated DVDs. HAHAHA. The DVD set was expensive back in the day, so I watched the whole show in less than a week and have been totally addicted to it. The same story can be told for a whole bunch of classmates, as the day arrived when the DVD set dropped in price thanks to a sale at HMV, and ALL of us went and bought it. Seriously, it’s like 6 of us went one day without knowing we did and bought the set. Like synchronized-buying.

The show is so unique that my sci-fi-fantasy-fiction-hating of a mother LOVED watching it. If you mention Lord of the Rings to my mother, she will tell you it’s well made… or Star Wars, she will tell you the story when she fell asleep during the film, a story similar to the one she will tell you when she watched Matrix. So my mother HATES this type of shows, but she LOVES Firefly – That’s how GOOD this show is… or was.

The show is set in the futuristic future (2517, to be exact), and we are screwed. LOL’ Earth is just the Earth that was, thus we were forced to search for somewhere else to live namely other planets and moons. Western culture has mashed up with Eastern culture, thus giving us great moments when our characters swear in unintelligible Chinese. Moreover, there is also The Alliance, which is very much like the Empire in Star Wars… and we have “the space cowboys”. The crew of our flying Firefly vessel, namely Serenity… including one of my favorite characters, Captain Mal Reynolds, ass-kicking 2nd in command Zoe, outrageous Wash the pilot, dense and gun lover Jayne, the sex-hungry mechanic Kaylee, love-daft Simon the doctor, crazy lunatic River mystery, and the sexy ‘companion’ Inara.

You’ll love the characters, you’ll love their bad moments, you’ll love their good moments. It’s not about the western, it’s not about the sci-fi, it’s about the people and their relations. I LUV it. I love the jokes, I love the mixing of Chinese and English… the gorram GORRAM! xD So you better WATCH it NOW, GORRAM it!

I have been watching one of the latest Japanese Dramas (JDrama), Last Friends… or RASUTO FURENZU as its read Katakana name. It is the first Asian drama I have seen (Chinese, Korean… or any other) – and despite the fact that I have seen my fair amount of Asian films, or listened to music in an Asiatic language. Last Friends is my first EVER Asian Soap… or as I call it, my AsiaNovela.

Last Thursday, we saw the fifth episode… so I have been roughly watching this weekly for the past month, and I can’t wait for more! Continue Reading…

The date, September 1999… It was a Wednesday on The WB channel. I was getting ready to watch a new episode of Charmed, because I was (and still am) a fan of the supernatural. So as I used to do, turned on the TV at 7-ish in the evening, while doing some homework… re-runs of Friends and Caroline in the City would be on, and I would watch more than doing my actual homework, ha! – But that day… 29th of September (according to Wikipedia), Popular began. It was 8 pm. I’m guessing, and the show began as two ‘teens’ began talking in a diner. Summer vacations were over, and both were discussing the issues of teenage beauty. Is Sam foxier than Brooke McQueen??

Wonderfalls - Shows You Shoul\'ve Watched When They Were on the AirNot long ago, I got the opportunity to watch Wonderfalls. Some of the words that come to mind are “Brilliant!” or “Fudge you, Fox,” and “Buh-buh-buh buh-bye.” In these short couple of weeks, I have fallen in love with the now-canceled-Fox-show.

What’s the show about? It’s about Jaye Tyler. Now, if you LOVED watching Juno being Juno with all her Junoness, you’ll love Jaye because Jaye is the quintessential Juno. Many-a-times people find themselves in the extremes of loving/hating the puns, and the worldplay… but if you love it, you’ll enjoy Wonderfalls.

Jaye is a 24-year-old graduate from Brown University with a Psychology Degree, yet she finds herself over-educated and in a crappy job in a souvenir shop on the American side of Niagara Falls. She also finds herself working under the supervision of a mouth-breather who is still in high school… when one day inanimate objects shaped in the form of animals begin talking to her. Yes, Jaye is a crazy person… or maybe not?

Jaye, very much a la Joan of Arc, begins listening to these voices that tell her to do stuff in very cryptic messages, which often results in her getting into trouble or even helping people! She’s also joined by her not-not-a-sister (double negative there), her over-achiever-yet-living-at-home brother, her neurotic but caring mother, her nervous dad… Mahandra, her 1/8 Indian (native American) black woman friend, a cute-yet-heart-broken bartender, and a whole bunch of other funky and quirky characters that will surely make you snort throughout the 13 episodes.

Buffy Reunites!

March 23, 2008 — Leave a comment

The Paley Television Festival paid tribute to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, because Buffy is cool, okay? Anyway, they managed to reunite most of the cast (except for Willow, Faith, Giles and Angel… aka. Alisson Hannigan, Eliza Dushku, Anthony Stewart Head and David Boreanaz).

I was trying to find different photos of the event, but all were basically the same… SMG with Green, low-res group photos, etc. However, it was nice to hear about Emma Caulfield out and about, since we don’t get to hear much from her projects. I have a few links talking about the event:

I Watch Catherine Too.

January 30, 2008 — 1 Comment

Anyone ever watched the Franco-Canadian show Catherine? TV-5 Latin America shows it, and I was trying to get some info online, but there wasn’t much. (to read a post about it click here)

CBC - Catherine Cast

Catherine is a pretty funny show done in French-speaking Canada, by CBC. It stars Sylvie Moreau as Catherine, a sassy and wacky advertiser at Mirage-Image Agency. Alongside Catherine, we see her landlady, her ex boyfriend, the Chinese owner of the grocery, etc. Oh! and don’t forget about her freak-o-megalomaniac flatmate, Sophie (Marie-Hélène Thibault).

If you’re a non-French speaker, or most likely are an English speaker… you can sign this petition to get it on DVD.

Shirley Holmes

May 10, 2007 — 1 Comment

For those of you who don’t know, The Adventures of Shirley Holmes was a show for kids that dealt with Shirley, the great-niece of famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. She was a bright and curious young girl with some emotional and social issues, that are triggered by the mysterious disappearance of her mother, Dr. Joanna Holmes, in Rwanda.

We follow Shirley, three or four years into her mom’s disappearance, when she finally meets Bo Sawchuk, a bad-boy-turned-friend and Watson-like companion to Shirley. Together they solve mysteries dealing with insurance fraud, kidnappings, alien abductions, illegal immigrants, conspiracies, and deception – just to name a few… all ending in young Shirley learning something about herself, and other people.
