Oscar 2010-2011 Watchlist

February 2, 2011 — 4 Comments

I know, I know… I haven’t been blogging about any of the awards since I launched YAM. But hey! If you were following YAM on Twitter, you’d know I’ve been commenting on them~

Did the Globes [Firth, Portman, Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right), Paul Giamatti, Melissa Leo + Christian Bale, + The Social Network wins for Movie+Score+Script+Director] Did the whole SAG Awards [Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Melissa Leo + Christian Bale (The Fighter) + The King’s Speech for Cast), and the Oscar noms aren’t really that surprising, but there were a couple of nice things.

First, Yay Javier Bardem, Yay John Hawkes.

Here’s my list of watched and not-watched films.

Light blue – Watched
Hot pink – Dying to watch.

Another one for Black Swan O+O

OMG, Natalie Portman news – still SHOCKING. xD

Amazing Oscar timing.

Also… YAY! Kim Hye-ja for Best Actress in Madeo/Mother again!

34th Japan Academy Prize Noms

December 17, 2010 — 7 Comments

First, let me get this out of the way: All the foreign nominations are American films, which includes Avatar, Toy Story 3, Hurt Locker, Inception and Invictus. Those along are a mixed bag for me xD Invictus was rather insipid, wouldn’t you say? And to include Avatar in the same list as Toy Story 3 is… hmm, rather a pity xD

The 34th Japan Academy Prize is led by Sang-il Lee’s Akunin (Villain) with 15 nods in 13 categories. Followed by Yoji Yamada’s Otouto (Yougner Brother/About her Brother) and Takashi Miike’s 13 Assassins with 11 nods. Rounding up the best pictures is Izuru Narushima’s Kokou no Mesu (A Lone Scalpel) with 5 nods.

And forgive the bias, but Yu Aoi got a nod for Supporting Actress xD

Once again, sorry for the late post ;P

Some surprises… good surprises, and just “where did that come from” surprises~

First, YAY! John Hawkes for Winter’s Bone, who’s been just laying low since the start of the award season. However, where did Hilary Swank for Conviction come from? xD

Though, The Social Network seems to be the favorite of the season – cough, not that great – it only earned Jesse Eisenberg Lead Actor. Instead, the rest of the Cast nominated films — Black Swan, The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right and The King’s Speech — got noms in all the rest categories.

I think I would have given The Social Network’s cast nomination to Winter’s Bone ;P

Also! Craig made me realized that they’ve snubbed Ryan Gosling and Michelle Wiliams – and Blue Valentine. Mmmkay… what’s up with that? But… YAY, Chris Colfer xD

Couldn’t resist to use this image as the main film here xD

Can’t help myself, and I haven’t even seen The Tourist. Look, I love movie stars… I’m sure I’m going to go “oh, it isn’t THAT bad” but I can even say when things should be awarded or not. xD But then again… ratings~

I’m just glad Timberlake wasn’t nominated in anything.

And since we’re speaking about out of their league: Lea Michelle for Glee is completely out of her league in her category against Toni Collette, Edie Falco, Tina Fey and Laura Linney. Look, I love Glee – don’t really watch 30 Rock, didn’t warm up to Laura Linney in The Big C, don’t like Edie Falco’s Nurse Jackie character, didn’t completely loved Season 2 of United States of Tara – but Lea Michelle is out of her league. xD

Toni Collette FTW!

Because the list is oh so long, just posting film…

Forgive the late post. xD

Black Swan leads the Broadcast Film Critics nominations with 12 nods, including Best Film, Director, Actress, and Supporting Actress. In the newcomer award, Chloe “Hit Girl” Moretz earns two nods for Kick-Ass, as well as Let Me In… which could pretty much suck because that would mean her votes split… or she could win for Kick-Ass, just because Hit Girl is awesome.

Why couldn’t they nominate her once for both like they do in Japan?

Cool stuff from these nominations? Some love for I Love You Philip Morris! And nomination for Jennifer Lawrence for Winter’s Bone in Best Actress and Young Actor/Actress, that’s going against Hailee Steinfeld for True Grit in Supporting Actress and Young Actor/Actress – it’s on!

Sucky about this? There’s no consistency in nominees… you’ve got categories with only 3 nominations — they’d better have nominated Madeo (Mother) last year, or I’m calling foul.

That’s the longest title I’ve ever written. I think. Not sure, but pretty~

First, let’s start with Oscar talk. There are 10 animated shorts line-up for 3/5 spots at the Academy.

  • Coyote Falls
  • Day & Night
  • Let’s Pollute
  • Madagascar, carnet de voyage (Madagascar, A Journey Diary)
  • Sensology
  • The Cow Who Wanted to Be a Hamburger
  • The Gruffalo
  • The Lost Thing
  • Le Silence Sous l’Ecorce (The Silence Beneath the Bark)

I’m never really good with Satellite Awards, I always forget them. But then again, there’s so many Satellite nominees per category… it seems a bit excessive. It’s like chucking all the best performances of the year, instead of choosing five spots even if three good performances will be left out.

And when there’s not enough good performances… they just fill the category up!

Inception is leading this one ;P

Excuse as I say that I thought Grammy awards couldn’t get any lower than last years. This is me saying that I enjoyed Eminem, and Lady Gaga fine.

But it’s really effing sad that Katy Perry’s got a Grammy nod for Album of the Year.

Not really static about any of the main categories. However, one category did really jump out for me — Julieta Venegas got a nod for Latin Pop Album. She plays so many instruments… and she has her own sound. When you listen to Julieta Venegas, you know it’s Julieta Venegas.

Her album wasn’t even nominated for a Latin Grammy — instead, Nelly Furtado’s which I actually liked fine won. The saddest part was that when watching that I told my mother “You know what would be sad, if Nelly Furtado wins Best Female Pop at the Latin Grammys.” Let’s not pretend Nelly is not singing in Spanish for commercial purposes. If she were trying to connect with her roots, she’d be singing more in Portuguese.

Plus, they also nominated They Might Be Giants for their Children Album [Meet the Elements, I am a Paleontologist]. I think that’s pretty much it.

Here are the general categories nominees~

It’s begun~~~ officially xD

and look! Another banner~~~ LOL

I generally like the Indie Spirits marketing. It’s a little more loose, but also generally more fun than the Golden Globes or the Oscar. And it’s certainly better than most Critics Choices…

This year’s nominations… don’t surprise much, actually. It seems those most nominated have been “big” independent films. You know, we’ve talked about this already — American independent films: There are different types of indie films~~~ The pseudo-indie, known in Hollywood as indie because they “only” cost $1M, there’s the more regular indie that could cost between a few thousand dollars, then there’s indie-indie of a couple of thousand dollars, and hardcore indie which… is, just really hardcore.

This year’s Indies seem more like pseudo-indie. Sadly… and at the same time exciting.

I hope we get good screeners. =D Last year we got a few good ones. The most elaborate one that time was Precious. Don’t worry, I didn’t vote because of the packaging.

I think it should be required for First Features, foreign, docus  and the John Cassavetes noms to send screeners, or allow screeners to be sent. But maybe that’s just me.

Anyway~~~ here are the nominees~~~
