Testing my Luck on Oscar Nom Predictions~

January 13, 2009 — 8 Comments

I NEVER EVER do nomination predictions… and considering my Golden Globes winner predictions, consider this attempt of mine at predicting a bit rubbish.

Oscar nominations are in about 9 days… and BAFTA nominations are in 2 days. O.O

With that said, I also found another problem… not knowing what films are considered withing the date range, so I am ONLY using films that are listed on IMDb as 2008 productions.

Also, I’m predicting almost all categories, including technical awards like Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects – except Documentary Short, Short Film Animated, Short Film Live Action… because I haven’t seen any shorts. Also no prediction on Documentary Feature. Is Man on Wire a lock on that???

Here I go… predictions after the break~~~

Best Actor:
Richard Jenkins – The Visitor
Frank Langella – Front/Nixon
Sean Penn – Milk
Mickey Rourke – The Wrestler
Leonardo DiCaprio – Revolutionary Road / Brad Pitt – Benjamin Button

I thought Rickard Jenkins was pretty good in The Visitor, and thought GGs totally snubbed him, but Oscar could snub him in favor of Brad Pitt or Leo.

Supporting Actor:
Josh Brolin – Milk
Philip Seymour Hoffman – Doubt
Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight
James Franco – Milk
Michael Shannon – Revolutionary Road

Robert Downey Jr. could sneak in there with Tropic Thunder, but TT is not Oscar standard  IMO…

Best Actress:
Kate Winslet – Revolutionary Road
Anne Hathaway – Rachel Getting Married
Meryl Streep – Doubt
Melissa Leo – Frozen River
Sally Hawkins – Happy-Go-Lucky

Though, they could favor Angelina just to not snub her and Brad for ratings… instead of either Leo or even Hawkins

Supporting Actress:
Penelope Cruz – Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis – Doubt
Tanji P. Henson – Benjamin Button
Kate Winslet – The Reader
Amy Adams – Doubt

Though they could snub Amy Adams for Marisa Tomei in The Wrestler…

Director:
Danny Boyle – Slumdog Millionaire
David Fincher – Benjamin Button
Gus Van Sant – Milk
Ron Howard – Frost/Nixon
Sam Mendes – Revolutionary Road

But would like to see Tom McCarthy with The Visitor sneak in there instead Howard, and/or Nolan for The Dark Knight instead of Mendes~~ or something like that. xD

Best Film:
Slumdog Millionaire
Benjamin Button
Milk
Doubt
Frost/Nixon

Though I would like to see TDK sneak in instead of Frost/Nixon, and maybe I can see Revolutionary Road or The Reader sneaking there… since The Reader is so holocaust-y.

Now, onto the others…

Animated Feature:
Wall-E
Waltz with Bashir
Kung Fu Panda

… or could be Bolt instead. I mean, this is sealed for WALL-E, right? LOL – I wish Bolt gets snubbed JUST BECAUSE!

Art Direction:
Benjamin Button
The Duchess
Australia
Revolutionary Road
The Dark Knight

It’s a toss in here for me… they could favor other Comic Book films like Iron Man, Hellboy 2. They could even favor Prince Caspian? Or WALL-E and/or Slumdog Millionaire?

Cinematography:
Benjamin Button
Slumdog Millionaire
Australia
WALL-E
Milk

Another toss for me… I mean, they could favor The Wrestler or even The Duchess.

Costume Design:
Benjamin Button
Australia
The Duchess
Revolutionary Road
Doubt

Another toss… maybe The Dark Knight? Or an epic that’s slipping my mind… xD

Film Editing:
Iron Man
Wanted
WALL-E
Slumdog Millionaire
Frost/Nixon

When thinking of editing, I think of fast quick action packed films (after all, Bourne won last year) – so here, I’m favoring films like Wanted (really, Amy??)… but maybe that’s snub for Quantum of Solace? (O.o ~~~)  Is Man on Wire (the documentary) a possible candidate? Coz that was brilliant editing, I thought~~~ or is it against some rule to nominated a documentary for Best Film Editing??? xD Maybe Benjamin Button can sneak in here??

Foreign Film:
The Class
Waltz with Bashir
Baader Meinhof Complex
3 Monkeys
Everlasting Moments

I’m cheating a bit on this one, since the Academy already reduced the list to 9. I still think Okuribito (Departures) from Japan could sneak in there instead of any of the last three~~~

Make-up:
The Reader
Benjamin Button (was it Make-up??? CGI??? Mixed???)
The Dark Knight

I’m not sure if Benjamin Button had make-up, or was it mixed, or if it was all CGI~~ In any case, Hellboy 2 or even Prince Caspian could sneak there somehow… O.O

Original Score:
Slumdog Millionaire
Benjamin Button
WALL-E
Milk
Australia

Give me another toss here, including The Dark Knight, Milk, Changeling, or Frost/Nixon

Original Song:
The Wrestler – “The Wrestler”
WALL-E – “Down to Earth”
Slumdog Millionaire – “Jai Ho”
Quantum of Solace – “Another Way to Die”
Gran Torino – “Gran Torino”

The lack of original songs for films on the list of films that I saw baffles me a little bit~~ Makes no wonder why Miley gets nominated for best original song… THERE’S NO ORIGINAL SONGS WRITTEN FOR MOVIES ANYMORE!!! So I’m throwing in there Bolt with “I Thought I Lost You” *knocks on wood* – and Australia with “By the Boab Tree”.

Sound Editing:
Iron Man
WALL-E
Slumdog Millionaire
Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight

Throwing in here Quantum of Solace or Wanted too… you know, same action-packed theory~

Sound Mixing:
WALL-E
Iron Man
The Dark Knight
Benjamin Button
Slumdog Millionaire

LOL’ without noticing, same as above~~~ Quantum or Wanted also. Same, same.

Visual Effects:
Benjamin Button
Iron Man
Australia

Did The Dark Knight had many special effects? Scares me that The Day the Earth Stood Still could get in here~~ xD

Original Screenplay:
Milk
The Visitor
Australia
Frozen River
Rachel Getting Married

This year is big on adaptations, so not many big name films on this category. I could see Vicky Cristina Barcelona sneaking there, maybe snubbing Australia or The Visitor.

Adapted Screenplay:
Benjamin Button
Slumdog Millionaire
Doubt
The Reader
Revolutionary Road

All or most the fave films are adapted this year, so this one is tough. Frost/Nixon could get in here instead of Revolutionary Road maybe???

Well, that’s it~~ what you think? As you can see… I did enjoy Australia, maybe would’ve enjoyed it more if it wasn’t an epic. Also according to my nominations predictions Benjamin Button could be up for 12-14 awards, depending where it fits in Makeup, Film Editing, Best Actor even? And Slumdog could be up to 9-10 perhaps? Depending if it gets any acting nod~~

Okay, I’m tired of counting… LOL’ Your thoughts?

  1. Man, I hope Miley doesn’t get nominated.

One thing Jenkins has in his favor is a SAG nomination. Poor Leo, he will likely be overlooked when he is so deserving a nod.

  2. Actually, I also forgot WALL-E for Original Screenplay~~~
how could I!! I could see WALL-E and Barcelona there instead of The Visitor and/or Australia.

On Miley… *shivers* anything for her not showing up on the Oscar red carpet and showing her tongue on screen.

My mind is set on Jenkins because I really really liked him on the film, and I hope he doesn’t get snubbed. And even though I LOVED Benjamin Button, I’d choose Leo to take the fifth spot over Brad.

And wow… would WALL-E become the most Oscar nominated animated film? I have it for 8 or 9 nods xD

  3. no as epic as last year as we suffered for Marion…
    O I miss her sooo

  4. agreed, julz~~ agreed.

Though I’m pretty sure that Mario should be handing this year’s Best Actor. I shudder at the thought that Rourke might try hitting on her… after all he might be taking the Oscar home. And I shudder a little bit about Penn too. LOL’ Is the jerk fame, you know? I wouldn’t want Marion to hang out with jerks~~

Now… Marion handing it to Leo? I could picture that~~ and waving to Kate xD

  5. I wanna see Ledger losing at the Oscars for the lulz.

Also, the Miley song sounds generic at best and the QOS song kinda sucks. Have The Wrestler or any song from Slumdog win it.

Best Actor will come down to Rourke or Penn IMO.

  6. Fanboy madness is crazy. I’d be scared if I were a member of the Academy. LOL’

But UGH, Miley… I’d choose Jack White over Miley any day… even more so to avoid Miley sticking her tongue out on the red carpet.

I would love Jaiho to win best song… well, first get nominated since it will be AWESOME to see them perform that song (Please, please… do that dance! LOL) – The Wrestler would be okay too… but remember Academy loves Animated film music x’D

Best Actor is easy to predict though… not a big toss to battle it out between Penn and Rourke. It’s been that way all season…

  7. “but remember Academy loves Animated film music x’D”

I read that line and thought of Enchanted. 3 songs nominated for Best Original Song and none of them won.

  8. Enchanted was pretty good, and it could’ve won (especially The Happy Working Song, since nothing can beat rats and roaches singing) but Once was the superior one that year… and Grammy can suck the Oscar for not giving Once the award for Best OST/Compilation.

    The Grammy can SUCK IT!
