[...] Today a year ago, I was introduced to Yu Aoi’s work on Shunji Iwai’s All About Lily Chou Chou, and the Shunji Iwai-related Rainbow Song. Little did I know that the characters that interested me the most in the films were played by the same actress. Nine days later, I watched Hula Girls, and a month later I was completely hooked with Yu Aoi, and yet another Shunji Iwai film… Hana & Alice. [...]

Yeah! Electra!
They never mention this on the Making Of on the dvd, but then again... they focus a lot on the love triangle in that. It's as if I've been watching a different film.

It's almost like they made those interactions by accident, and it turned out good. Happy accidents!

The Electra Complex!?!....I never even thought about that. Good observation.
I also didn't like Miyamoto much and the whole amnesia plot was a bit silly. I feel that if the movie was entirely dedicated to Alice, it would have been better.
The complicated relationship between Alice and her parents was the heart of the movie.

I know! This is a gem~~~ I love how the scene with her father played out, and the OST has grown on me as well. I think I've said it in one of my posts, but many of Yu's films are chick flicks taken to another whole new level, when oftentimes we regard that type of films in a negative light.

Once in a blue moon, chick flicks can be good people!! With the right story, the right cast, and the right people involved. Shunji Iwai + Yu Aoi is never a miss~~~

Now~~~ if only Iwai had included Yu in his New York, I Love You short... sighs.

There are films like that who can't be seen as masterpieces or landmarks in film history but yet you love them just as much. I call them gems or sweet cakes because they have qualities in their own specific way.

With Hana and Alice, what sounds like a cheesy plot is turned into a captivating story thanks to the art of a very creative filmaker -Master Iwai- and the enormous talent of two young actresses.

Of course, I have a preference for Alice :)) . She's grace personified in many a scene.
